Broodstock

A broodstock is a collection of fish that are artificially mated at hatcheries to produce offsprings that would become future fish stocks for recreational fishing.

Steelhead broodstock fishing

In British Columbia, broodstocks are collected for salmon, steelhead and trout.

Salmon broodstocks are collected by either seining or simply waiting for adult spawners swimming to the hatchery. Steelhead and coastal cutthroat trout broodstocks are often collected by volunteer anglers who catch and transport them to the hatchery.
