Ucluelet, August 8th - 10th 2012

We were in Ucluelet for a few days last week. Another beautiful unique part of this province that needs to be revisited. Here are a couple of photographs that kind of sum up our trip.





There'll be a more detailed report on how we did on the boat in a bit, but here's what else we did when we were not on the boat:

I might try it with the largest one we brought back. It was easily over 1lb, possibly 2.

I had one tonight, it was pretty delicious... ;)

Makes me wish I had brought my fishing rod when I was down there.  I love mackerel on a charcoal grill.  We pay big bucks for this at Japanese Robata places.  That sashimi recipe sounds intriguiing.  I wonder if there is a place around here that sells fresh mackerel?

We were considering making sashimi from the big one we brought back but there's actually quite a bit of nematodes inside the fish... Not sure if I want to get anisakiasis... :-\

I have all these smaller ones vacuum packed. ;D Next time I am going to grill some on charcoal.

There probably isn't a commercial fishery because of the lack of demand. If these are available at T&T, they'd be selling pretty fast. ;)

Saw mackerel on sale at Stupid store the other day.  Whole, ungutted, wrapped and refriged....eww.

SS seems to sell alot of their fish ungutted and in the round.

Scomber Japonicus starts to deteriorate as soon as it's removed from the water-it needs to be bled/gutted and iced right away-it's certainly not the white fleshed fish I had for lunch @ Hitoe on 4th Ave not even close.

Don't worry SS, those fish were prepped just fine right after they were caught.

That's why you should freeze your fish a good 7 days before consuming them raw.  :)

They are practically BEGGING for people to take the mackerel out of the water... They are agressive predators of the salmon fry.
