Why the angry face? If you can't do it in the daylight it's probably dodgy.

I'm guessing this is to curb sturgeon poaching?

Maybe for some, but not all. Many legit sturgeon anglers prefer to fish at night because it's quieter and peaceful, and/or they work shift.

That's why I said "probably". Sometimes you have to make sacrifices for the greater good.

With no eyes on the river after dark, poachers will have a free hand to do whatever they wish.

My concern is that with less honest recreational fishermen on the water, this open up even more opportunities for the poacher or whatever other groups harvest fish at night.

Less eyes on the water that are willing to call in reports of illegal activity. Not that there is going to be any investigation at night anyways.

From a safety perspective the less boats on the river at night, the better - until there is an emergency and someone needs help.

There are pros and cons to both sides and I suspect that management has done this to cut back or eliminate nighttime CO enforcement expenses but to also point out that they now have effectively doubled their manpower coverage by having to only cover daylight hours because there can't be anyone fishing at night.

This also will reduce the number of complaints or reports of illegal fishing because the honest fisherman will no longer be on the water at night. Less calls = less work. Which justifies not needing to hire more CO's.

I agree with Rieber,  hard not to be a bit cynical when It comes to this decision
