Be sure to propertly ID your catch on the Vedder right now!!
« on: October 03, 2014, 09:15:56 AM »

Just a heads up, I saw two sockeye caught in the lower river yesterday, one of which was hatchery clipped.  They are headed for Cultus Lake.  Luckily the guy who released it did so with as little hardship to the fish.  As for the other guy, he dragged it up to shore, noticed it had an adepose fin, yelled "Wild Coho!!", and tossed it back!  Although these fish are only slightly rosy along the sides, please look for a greenish head as this is a good indicator that THEY ARE NOT COHO AND CANNOT BE RETAINED.  I have heard through a 3rd party from those working up at Cultus that the sockeye are still coming in, so take care to ID these fish and release them as quick as possible!!

- I'd hate to see someone keep a clipped Cultus Sockeye thinking it was otherwise :)

Cheers :)

They really should clip a different fin on those socks.

The worst is that no one expect to get a sockeye in October on the Vedder, but that's when they spawn.....

Actually Cultus Lake sockeye are in the Vedder from late July till November.  They spawn late November into December.

That was discussed way back when this hatchery program started.  The fact is an adipose clip has shown less mortalities than any other fin removal.  Managers knew this would cause confusion but still considered it best for the fish.  Identifying these fish as sockeye is not difficult ... anglers just need to do their homework.

You'd think it's about time we took fishing licenses to the next level with a simple 10 question quiz when we renew our licenses to identify the common species in our waters...

Too hard on the fish and marks have to be visible, in the water, when they are counted at the enumeration fence.  There, the fish swim by a mirror that plainly shows the presence or absence of an adipose fin to the counter.

Forget the colour tho thats a good indicator. Sockeye have no spots. So simple. All other salmon and trout have some form of spots but sockeye are sleek lol. Such a sure and easy way

Bang on. There's no way to confuse a sockeye for any other pacific salmon species. They don't have any spots such a clearer indication even if you're a moron.

Unfortunately I don't think the uniformed bottom bouncer/ snagger cares too much.
Guys taking more than they need on the vedder
Especially really big chinooks.
It sucks

Ya, we caught and released a chrome one in early December a number of years back.

Nothing wrong with taking a big chinook. Some people prefer the whites for eating.

I happen to be the guy that landed my sockeye, in the water and the reason we questioned it was because it had many scales missing along is back which made it appear to be spots while in the water and it was clipped which also threw us off. Once I saw the green head I realized it was a sockeye. This is the first time I have gotten sockeye in the fall and one that clean as well

P.S. - I'm also the third party info because my wife takes care of a ladies son who is working with the cultus sockeye right now  :)
