Not all sockeye go solid crimson with green heads. I have seen sockeye that look sort of like that.

It's a chum/pink hybrid.
First time I've actually seen a good picture of one, that was actually identified as one.

As far as I know they did a DNA test on it (he has it in a circular tank at the hatchery he works at - caught it at the outflow and ran it up to a running tank). Heck, maybe I'll get to see it alive if it's not dead by the time I get up there next weekend  ;D

Wow!  I thought those chum looked a bit "pinkish"!  The one in the net has a developing hump!  The other has spots on its back.  I've never heard of a pink/chum hybrid, but anything is possible...

First pic sure looks like a pink with the the hump, oval spotted tail, smaller size; the stripes were not definitive at that angle.
Second pic def. chum stripes.
A hybrid would certainly fool everyone. Does that count as half a chum?

You hear it all the time "that's coho no that's a steelhead" etc -  Another thought  I have is why all the heavy fireline, power pro that is being used on the Vedder/Chilliwack system. Its not sockeye season on this river. Whatever happen to 12lb-15lb main and 8lb-10lb leaders.Maybe a little introduction course on proper fish identification/release and proper fishing ethics with some basic fishing techniques would help.

Because all the beeks bought that setup for sockeye and are now using it on the vedder.

im not sure where all these rippers have came from?? Every single run i went to it was packed with snaggers bottom bouncing or guys pulling back so hard it makes that rippppp sound.

If there wasn't so many rippers everywhere would the fish bite more regularly?

i don't even hold back anymore...whenever someone starts ripping beside me, especially when i'm there first, i won't hesitate to tell them they're spooking the fish. it's so annoying and inconsiderate.

And what proportion of those people acknowledge what you are saying and aim to modify their behavior and how many just shrug and continue to jig away?
