When are salmons not safe for eating?
« on: November 01, 2005, 03:53:10 PM »

i've always heard the spawned out salmons/spawning salmons r not good for eating, some even mentioned that the coloured ones already have some kind of toxic developed in them. i don't know, i personally don't keep any spawning or spawned out salmons, haven't even tried those before. thanks for any information, that might help some of us here.

I don't know about the toxins (perhaps a biologist can help out here) but coloured salmon are mushy and tasteless. I made the mistake once and never again.

Coloured fish that are near spawning phase don't taste good, period. Not sure why people sometimes bonk a coloured fish and say, "it's for the smoker."

A old fish smoked, is still an old fish. The flesh are still soft, and will fall apart when you pick it up.

When you can get into that many coho, you are allowed to be picky. ;)

No but chums have been documented as far up as the Alberta border in the Mackenzie system.

No as soon as you bring out of the water and kill it. It turns really dark almost as dark as this one
