Shiny Pencil Lead
« on: October 25, 2004, 08:59:52 AM »

Is there any chemical or household product that will darken  up a roll of shiny pencil lead....what reacts with lead (slowly!)??

Vinegar should do it.  Soak it in it for a day.

Can't believe it. I put the roll outside in the drizzle for about two hours and it darkened right up! Must be that nice acid rain from Vladivostok!

I've found that the shiny pencil lead seems to be stronger and harder to cut with pliers than the non shiny pencil lead. Anyone else experience this?

Use dognail trimmers to cut your pencil lead. They cut fast and easy and always leave a perfect hole. I've been doing this for about five years now. What's really neat is you can trim off a short 1/4" section off to use as crimp on shot or simply to fine tune your existing weight. Also works great when salvaging pencil lead found on the shore. Try it - you'll be amazed as to why you never used them before. You can buy them cheap at Dollar stores or spend the big bucks - $5 at Zellers/wal-Marts.

Yeah that shiny stuff is harder and more brittle too if I remember right.

Must be how its made.

That looks exactly like one of the trimmers in one of my vests. Use it.
