Roe preservative
« on: October 28, 2004, 12:54:19 AM »

I keep my roe in glycerin oil mixed with few drops of anise oil. Sometimes it works just excellent and other times I have a better success with wool :) - go figure.

Just wandering what other preservatives people use. I would be interested specially in any other type of oil (liquid) than glycerin, as it is a bit of expensive and it is tough to find sometimes. I usually buy it in Kapers on Robson Street, and anise oil in one old pharmacy/groceries store on Granville Street in Downtown. Where do you get your supplies?

Are you talking about single eggs or egg clusters. I don't use any preservatives for the latter except Pro Cure and borax

single eggs. I find pro cure thing too messy :) and not necessary, but that is just my preference.

Borax & Kool-aid for colour.

that's what cheap latex gloves are for, but if you want, a brine of sugar and noniodized salt (equal parts with just enough cold water to dissolve them) works well too.  a few minutes will do the trick....too long, the roe turns to rubber.
store in borax.

you could add powdered dye to the brine also.
