LOVE the yellowlegs.

Thanks for sharing, always a treat.
Yes, they are quite an intesting bird.  Imagine having to go around life with YELLOW legs!

them herons always look awkward, that last heron pic is such a great shot!
Herons look all cool when they stand around, but in the landing and take off - not so graceful looking ;)

While in HK I had the chance, yesterday, to get out to Yuen Long to shoot some of the water birds.  There were many egrets and herons as well as some ducks and wading shore birds.  Most were too far and too small to shoot, but I got some decent pics:

While here in Hong Kong, I've had the chance to shoot some beautiful birds.  A couple of days ago we walked through the Hong Kong Park and their lovely, free, aviary.  Here are the results of the walk.  Any ID's and comments welcome!

We were out at Sai Kung, a village on the outskirts of Hong Kong.  In the afternoon, the kites came in much closer and there were about 10-20 of us shooting them...  Here are the shots I came back with (a bit harsh on the sky)

Comments and Critique always welcome.

Great shots all around.  Not much help on the IDs.  But here's a couple of the easier ones.

#3, Rose Ringer Parakeet.
#4, Lorikeet (if you have a shot with its mouth open/feeding, you will see a brush like tongue, its neat)

Puzzled on that 'cockatiel headed' dove, lol.

Love the shots of the kites!

#1, Eastern Great Egret (?)

Thanks Damien,

Turns out #1 of the Aviary series is a "Crested Pigeon" and #7 is a Maroon-Breasted Crowned Pigeon.  LOL - not exactly creative names :)

Still working on various ID's

edit... The parakeet appears to be actually an Alexandrine Parakeet

No Photos, but have been told by my son who took photos that there are now 16 snowy owls over at Boundary Bay along with a few other types of owls and other raptors

Thanks, yes - I have heard that they are down there.   I also have heard about a few people getting too close to them and harrassing them :(

It's a mixed blessing when they are here. It means that their normal wintering grounds don't have enough food so they have come down even further to feed.  Good for us (a chance to see them) but bad for them.

I got out yesterday, in anticipation of a nice sunny day for shooting...  The weather service plays some cruel jokes some days :(

Anyway....

Terrific shots all around, as usual.

I love the short ear coming right at you.  Particuarly his neck positioning as it appears that he is altering his sight line, mid flight, zeroing in.  Really cool.

--I noticed the birds even in flight have good focus and definition... are you in a set position and guessing distance for focus or using fast shutter speed or combo?
--Just looking for some hints on birds in flight technique thanks.
