Good catch on the ruby!

I was at Reifel on new years day walking a path and saw what I thought was a hummingbird.  Odd, so I crept up, crept up and noticed it was a golden crowned kinglet.  It was obviously very comfortable with people as I got within a foot of him.  He was not fased at all.  Picking at berries, hanging upside down and just being very animated in general.  Cool to be so close to him.

The place was BUSY.  A lot of people in the area to get glimpse of the hawk owl no doubt.

Great pose on the 4b shot.

Thanks Damien!

It would be nice to catch a Gold-Crowned Kinglet that wasn't 20 feet up in the fir boughs.   That's the fun of visiting Reifel.  Like fishing - you never know what you're going to get on any given day that you go out. :)

Some Buffleheads from Burnaby Lake on Monday.  Since Reifel was all iced up and most of Burnaby Lake was too, that left only a small area where they could hang out.  GREAT for photo ops!

1) Buzzing the flight deck:

Some Burnaby Lake Birds.  The ice around all the local lakes and even on Burnaby Lake forced the usually shy birds to come in much closer.  The mergansers have NEVER been so close.  Monday was a good day to shoot.  (It also was probably our last sunny day until late May :( )

1) Unknown Sparrow (Fox?) - These guys will pose for peanuts ;)

The Getaway:
This Steller's Jay made a quick getaway after grabbing his peanut. He's a participant in my ongoing efforts to train them to come to my hand for food. It was pretty early morning, so the High ISO and low light make him a bit noisy :(

The Stellars are bit tougher to get to hand than the Greys, thats for sure!

The Corvidaes are as social as they come, just put in the time.  He'll come.

Yeah, the Greys will take food from my frying pan WHILE it's cooking!

The Stellers have stopped flying totally away, and they know to follow my hand when I make a throwing motion...  They just won't come closer than 10ft.  One day.  One day....

Juvenile Eagle Learning to Hunt...

As I was walking along the beach on Boundary Bay  (http://"http://www.venturevancouver.com/boundary-bay-regional-park")in Delta, I passed a young Eagle on a power pole.

(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5253/5503669110_1015975b7e_b.jpg) (http://"http://www.flickr.com/photos/dragonspeed/5503669110/")
Learning to Hunt (http://"http://www.flickr.com/photos/dragonspeed/5503669110/") by DragonSpeed (http://"http://www.flickr.com/people/dragonspeed/"), on Flickr

I stopped to take a few shots and then while I was looking to try to shoot the Brant out past the flats, the eagle starts to fly! Someone said something and I turned around to get a shot of him passing by. He swooped down and tried to pick a little male Bufflehead out of the ditch next to the dyke.

(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5218/5503079729_0ed51f928c_b.jpg) (http://"http://www.flickr.com/photos/dragonspeed/5503079729/")
Learning to Hunt (http://"http://www.flickr.com/photos/dragonspeed/5503079729/") by DragonSpeed (http://"http://www.flickr.com/people/dragonspeed/"), on Flickr

No love, the little bufflehead ducked into the foot deep ditch and evaded the talons. He flew back and settled back onto his power pole.

(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5019/5503669446_dca4b5f7ff_b.jpg) (http://"http://www.flickr.com/photos/dragonspeed/5503669446/")
Learning to Hunt (http://"http://www.flickr.com/photos/dragonspeed/5503669446/") by DragonSpeed (http://"http://www.flickr.com/people/dragonspeed/"), on Flickr

He didn't seem to really fully settle.. had that itch to move look, so I positioned myself a little closer to the duck and with a less obstructed view. Sure enough - A send pass - FAIL,

(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5057/5503081059_a0e0d82e85_b.jpg) (http://"http://www.flickr.com/photos/dragonspeed/5503081059/")
Learning to Hunt (http://"http://www.flickr.com/photos/dragonspeed/5503081059/") by DragonSpeed (http://"http://www.flickr.com/people/dragonspeed/"), on Flickr

and then a quick 360 and another go at it... this time he tried to hover (eagles trying to hover - not quite as graceful as humming birds or harriers :) ) This attempt ended in failure again.

(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5174/5503669928_95f74b55d2_b.jpg) (http://"http://www.flickr.com/photos/dragonspeed/5503669928/")
Learning to Hunt (http://"http://www.flickr.com/photos/dragonspeed/5503669928/") by DragonSpeed (http://"http://www.flickr.com/people/dragonspeed/"), on Flickr

After some time on his pole, he came in for a last pass. He was like a low level bomber hugging the contours of the dyke - probably only a few feet off the ground. He was definitely looking for a stealth attack (too close to the ground and too fast - all my shots of this ended up with nicely focused grass and a blur for a bird). The duck was wise to this one too... a quick submerge and it was safe again. The eagle returned to his pole.

(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5131/5503671192_4ccdae99f5_b.jpg) (http://"http://www.flickr.com/photos/dragonspeed/5503671192/")
Learning to Hunt (http://"http://www.flickr.com/photos/dragonspeed/5503671192/") by DragonSpeed (http://"http://www.flickr.com/people/dragonspeed/"), on Flickr

At this point the duck flew off and I continued my walk. Apparently hunting is a lot harder than the adult eagles make it look. It seems it just wasn't that little Bufflehead's day to be dinner. I hope you enjoyed the hunt vicariously with me :)

love the saw-whet owl. Twice while working in the bush (different locations and years). We had a saw-whet just follow us around for almost the whole day. It was as if it was wondering what we were doing. Beautiful little bird!

Had the flickers nest in the Alder for 3 years! Saw them raise 4 chicks each time and one year was even home when they all flew out of the nest. Fist just took off, Second pretty much the same, Third almost hit the house and landed on the roof, while the fourth took it's sweet time and when it did. It just hit the ground. I chased it around and placed it back into the nest. Didn't want any part of that. Spent the next little while on a branch, then just jumped down to the ground. One of the parents were near by and was constantly calling to it. It spent the night and the two following days in the garden under the shrubs. No idea if it flew away, but it was gone and I found no feathers anywhere. Since then they come back every year, think about nesting but them just fly away. Personally I think it has something to do with the housing development that is now behind us, but who knows

I saw a ring-necked pheasant out on Westham Island the other day, but neglected to stop and shoot him :(  Flickers are such beautiful birds... The most formal looking of the woodpeckers IMHO.  It would have been cool to see the Flickers nest building and the chicks fledging!  Too bad about the change in neighbourhood  :'(

I got to see the saw-whet at Refiel on Saturday.

The one time I don't bring my camera.  Snapped a crappy pic with my berry and let him sleep.

Snow geese and shorbirds are there in the thousands right now.

In the spring we don't get a LOT of sunny days.  I was lucky a couple of weeks ago to get sun and time to go shoot.  The results:

The Steller's Jays are such characters.  I love to watch them try and grab a peanut from my feeder.  They almost hover sometimes :D  So many people mis-ID them as Blue Jays.  TOTALLY different animal.

Lesson #1 be your own harshest critic.  Don't accept that you have the best shot of something.  Keep working on a BETTER one.  (like fishing - who wants the 8lb Coho when you can get the 10 lber :D )

Thanks guys.

D S your pics are my favorite part of Rods site lol and alwas cheer me up, like looking at a local version of National Geographic.
My friend forgot her big Canon with the zoom on our walk tonight but I had my pocket camera. We stopped to admire a bird of prey sitting on a post when we heard some weird squack caw sound repeating and getting closer. Then this creature appeared and flew overhead.I have seen only one or two of them despite their nesting in Pitt Meadows/Polder.

Last night, I saw a Downy sitting on my balcony rail.. very unusual to see them on a horizontal surface.  Then I noticed one on my feeder as well.  Soon after, the one on the feeder came down to the rail and did the "here's your food - I pre-chewed it for you" thing for junior.

I noticed that junior certainly still had some of his young down and was reluctant to jump onto the feeder. They stayed around for about 10 minutes. I wish there had been more light and that I didn't have to shoot through my glass door :(

A couple from Sunday...

The first is my old friend the Chestnut backed chickadee. Often overlooked, but still a pretty little bird:

I don't know if my spotting has gotten better or not.  But I have spotted more Cedar Waxwings this year than I have in my life combined.  I am seeing them on power/cable lines all over the city of Vancouver (particulary around south Granville.  There were easily a dozen in a small area at TWU ponds last week as well.  I had never seen them in a small flock.  But I am pretty new to birding.

I definitely have found that as I take more photos of birds and become better at recognizing the different species that also seem to start noticing them more, so it probably is partially because you are paying more attention and that they aren't just "brown flying things" anymore :)

Herons look all cool when they stand around, but in the landing and take off - not so graceful looking ;)

While in HK I had the chance, yesterday, to get out to Yuen Long to shoot some of the water birds.  There were many egrets and herons as well as some ducks and wading shore birds.  Most were too far and too small to shoot, but I got some decent pics:

1) Egret (unknown type)

While here in Hong Kong, I've had the chance to shoot some beautiful birds.  A couple of days ago we walked through the Hong Kong Park and their lovely, free, aviary.  Here are the results of the walk.  Any ID's and comments welcome!

We were out at Sai Kung, a village on the outskirts of Hong Kong.  In the afternoon, the kites came in much closer and there were about 10-20 of us shooting them...  Here are the shots I came back with (a bit harsh on the sky)

Comments and Critique always welcome.

Great shots all around.  Not much help on the IDs.  But here's a couple of the easier ones.

#3, Rose Ringer Parakeet.
#4, Lorikeet (if you have a shot with its mouth open/feeding, you will see a brush like tongue, its neat)

Puzzled on that 'cockatiel headed' dove, lol.

Love the shots of the kites!

#1, Eastern Great Egret (?)

Thanks Damien,

Turns out #1 of the Aviary series is a "Crested Pigeon" and #7 is a Maroon-Breasted Crowned Pigeon.  LOL - not exactly creative names :)

Still working on various ID's

edit... The parakeet appears to be actually an Alexandrine Parakeet

Thanks, yes - I have heard that they are down there.   I also have heard about a few people getting too close to them and harrassing them :(

It's a mixed blessing when they are here. It means that their normal wintering grounds don't have enough food so they have come down even further to feed.  Good for us (a chance to see them) but bad for them.

Terrific shots all around, as usual.

I love the short ear coming right at you.  Particuarly his neck positioning as it appears that he is altering his sight line, mid flight, zeroing in.  Really cool.

Yeah, I think he was in mid turn at that moment and probably picked up on my motion in the distance.  It's always cool to get the intense look :)

--I noticed the birds even in flight have good focus and definition... are you in a set position and guessing distance for focus or using fast shutter speed or combo?

1) I largely pick a location that looks like it will be near or along flight paths... They tend to like to fly along the same hunting route over and over.
2) I use "AI Focus" on my camera, which means  the point that I've chosen to be in focus, the camera will work to keep it in focus all the time.
3) You have to realise when a sitting bird is likely to fly.  Watch them enough and you get feel for it.
4) I try to keep my shutter speed over 400 when shooting at 400mm.  ideally 1000.
5) When shooting BiF, especially if they are going to be against the sky, I set exposure compensation to get about 2/3-1 full stop OVERexposure due to the brightness of the sky.

Hope that helps.
