That's gotta hurt!  More disappointing is the fact that the fish just got wasted!  Good point about the waves from boats - you need to be careful about fish that are lying next to the shore.  Bye the way, what's the best way to keep fish fresh if you don't have a cooler on the beach?  For sockeye - this hasn't been a problem for me as I often have two fish before the hot sun becomes a factor in the later morning.  I've seen guys put their fish in the mud and shade.  Others just leave the fish on the beach or in the water...

Keep your fish out of the water unless you want the flesh to go soft and mushy. Your best be it to put your fish in a cooler immediatly. If you can't do that then put them in a burlap sack and then dip it into the water to keep the sack moist but store the fish up on the bank.

This bears repeating.  Evaporative cooling is quite the powerful chilling agent.  You want the bag MOIST. Not soaking wet.  Also create some shade that doesn't block the wind.  The radiative heat of the sun can more than make up for the evaporative effects   Remember to take frequent breaks to moisten your burlap.

Another note:  Garbage bags are treated with odour reducing chemicals so that your garbage won't stink as much.  Those chemicals will then get all over your fish if you carry your fish in them   

(So much to think about...never mind the FISHING aspect  )

Hose baby.  Hose. Lot's of water.

I wash mine down when I'm washing out the cooler and other gear.

(I also have a reasonable supply source available.  If one gets gungy, I just get another)

If I am away from the car I always store fish on the shore in the shade with clear plastic bag or burlap bag. If the car close by I put the fish in a cooler full of ice. I never use black garbage bags because they are made from the dirtiest plastic recyclable materials and are to be used only for garbage.

During the non summer/bbq/camping months , many places have Styro Foam coolers and Regular coolers for sale , really cheap . Throw one of the blue frozen blocks in the bottom , and you good to go . But only use the styrofoam coolers IN THE CAR , don't leave them on the shore , they break really easy , and are non enviro friendly . In fact , after thinking about it , don't use them at all if possible .
You can get them in a few sizes too .

The best thing to do(i think) , Buy a "fish only " cooler , and a frozen Blue Block , 1 block of that Blue stuff will last a couple days in a cooler , and keep you fish icy cold .
And by having a "fish only" cooler , you don't really have to worry about the clean up as much , just hose it out when you get home and your done .

Biffchan is right on the mark with his advise.

I've been doing this for over 25 years. It really works for keeping quality meat. DO NOT leave your fish in the water.
We always clean our fish right away. That way it prevents bad flesh from the stomach acids.
If you're close enough to your vehichle throw the fish in the cooler on ice (put a piece of cardboard between the ice and fish to prevent flesh burn).
