How many fish do you keep for eating?
« on: November 17, 2004, 08:51:20 PM »

Just wanted to get a rough idea of how many fish are kept and eaten by our members. Demographics of the catch would also be nice.

For me this inlcudes:

9 Sockeye (my favorite eating fish)
3 Fraser Springs (close second for eating)
5 Coho (I don't like them near as much so I don't keep as many)
1 Chum (Chromer kept for eggs and smoking)

I have only killed a few fish for my family (I don't eat fish, except halibut). The sockeye eluded me for yet another seaosn...
These are the fish I killed for me/family:
2 chinooks
2 coho

I killed a lot more fish for other people (I mean a lot, mostly halibut). I know it's illegal to sell sport-caught fish, so I wasn't doing any of that (althoug I had offers...).
These are the fish I killed for other people (buddies, etc):
4 chinooks
4+ coho
2 lingcod
15+ halibut
1 skate
6+ rock fish (yelloweye included)
1 sea-lion (almost...)
1 squid (sorta)
many others I was unable to release so I retained them.

So far, 1 coho and 1 chum. Then in the winter, 3-5 steels, depending on size.

The bass tastes fantastic. Fillets, dipped in bread crumb and pan fry. :)

I think red springs taste the best, they melt in the mouth when smoked. Sockeye second, then coho. I've killed more reds than any other species this year... but after this weekend I think my coho count will be ahead.  BP

My family doesn't really eat fish so as a rule if I have one in the freezer I won't bonk another one .

Salt:
4 spring
4 coho
3 halibut
3 lings

After all that I really didn't need more fish, but still kept a few from the rivers:

2 red spring
1 white spring
2 coho
4 chum

Some of the non fishing people in my family are happy as they are always willing to take some fish off my hands.

Salt
4 Coho
1 spring

Fresh
1 Chinook
11 Sockeye
1 chum
20ish rainbow

That's for a family of 4.  And I figure it's about $250 per lb. if you add up all the gear ;D
