Government Resonse to Steelhead Petitions
« on: June 14, 2018, 10:57:04 AM »

As expected...

First Petition to Fisheries Minster re: Suspension of known net fisheries heavily impacting steelhead:

https://petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-1416

Government bafflegab reply:

While chum salmon fisheries can contribute to Interior Fraser Steelhead mortality, other sources of mortality have not been adequately assessed, including impacts during the freshwater phase of the lifecycle...

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is currently developing a Recovery Potential Assessment as part of the Species at Risk Act emergency listing process. This assessment will consider the impacts of threats to Thompson and Chilcotin Steelhead populations.

Second Petition to Minister of Environment re: Issuing an Emergency Listing Order under the Species At Risk Act for Interior Fraser Steelhead.

https://petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-1419

Government stall & Pass The Buck reply, while sneaking in a reconciliation tag:

COSEWIC is expected to conduct a full assessment of Steelhead Trout in the coming years, independently of the outcome of this current emergency listing process.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada has reviewed the COSEWIC emergency assessments and is now considering additional scientific information to complement the assessments, including any Indigenous Knowledge that might be shared by Indigenous Groups.

Thanks for the info Nog.

What troubles me about this is the fact these two petitions only gathered at total of 2075 signatures from B.C. residents.

E-1419- 583
E-1416 - 1492

Seems just like our officials we have written these stocks off.......  :(
Atleast the Species At Risk Act process has been implemented, however it does look like those processes will take much longer than it should for that Species at Risk.

Hmmmm.... the low number of petition signers kind of indicates the low level of concern.   I think the government will just continue doing what they are doing.

--low petition numbers could just be a sign of headbanging fatigue on this and other fish and wildlife issues of concern...does not necessarily mean a lack of interest.
--I don't fish for steelhead but I did buy an endorsement...my way of indicating interest. If everyone with a freshwater fishing license also purchased the conservation surcharge for steelhead...The government would see the interest and at the worst at least the money would be available for management.
