Memorial Rod - for Dad
« on: November 02, 2015, 10:03:41 AM »

My father passed away in February 2015. He was my first fishing partner and teacher. Over the years the student then became the teacher. As his health started to fail, we would still go fishing, but the days were shorter and the walks to the river much shorter.

I had this rod built up in his memory. I sold this Sage 2106 blank to my good friend Ivan about 7 years ago, who in turn, sold it back to me a couple of months ago.

Terry Skipper from Copper River Rods & Repair took my ideas and did an excellent job. I went to his house yesterday and before he epoxied the butt cap, I placed some of my Dad's ashes into the cap. Now, my Dad comes fishing with me all the time.

The rod is not "blingy". I like the more classic subdued colours, but the wraps do stand out in a very reserved way. Well done, Terry!

My condolences to you, I lost my father 3 years ago and I know how you feel. What a great way to memorialize your Dad and have him with you. Some of my fondest memories were when we would go night fishing for pickerel and bass in Ontario (I was the one to teach my Dad how to fish). Very nice build.

Thanks to all who commented.

I'm going to go out this week and see if we can catch some Coho on this little beauty.

I hope you landed a fish this past weekend on it. It's a beautiful rod, and an excellent idea to insert some of his ashes as to bring him with you and cherish those days on the water that much more. Thanks for sharing.

A great looking rod and an excellent tribute. I suspect the rod should bring you some extra mojo on the river too. Thanks for sharing and enjoy.

Great post and a smashing way to immortalize your Dad on the flow. :)
I can relate to your feelings. It's been five years since I lost mine. He was not only my first fishing teacher, but also my role model and best friend. Not a day on the flow goes by without me thinking of him.

How about organizing a steelheading outing on the first anniversary of your father's passing in memory of all Dads who are no longer with us?
I'll bring out some high end gut warming stuff.  ;)

That sounds great! February 10 is when he passed away. We should definitely do that.

February 10,2016 is a Wednesday, which means it won't work for most people who work weekdays.
How about Sunday, February 14 (Valentine's Day)? After honouring our deceased parents, we can come back home to honour our living ladies. ;)

Sounds great! The next day (February 15) is my birthday. Good times all around.
