Eating feedlot salmon = lower IQ
« on: May 12, 2013, 08:31:58 AM »

https://www.onnit.com/blog/rumblings-with-santi-fish-and-the-importance-of-fish-body-oils-in-the-diet/?a_aid=COCO

"The researcher reported an analysis of over 700 farmed, wild and supermarket samples of salmon, which found 14 contaminants in the samples of salmon. The report found that farmed salmon and supermarket fillets of farmed salmon contain on average about 10 times the levels of most of the organochlorine and organobromine toxic compounds that are found in wild Pacific salmon on a wet weight basis. The contaminants found in farmed salmon, especially PCBs and dioxins, are known to cause decrements of IQ in children exposed prenatally.

It was also found that memory functions were depressed in older adults who ate large amounts of PCB-contaminated fish. These contaminates are not something a weekend diet detox can get rid of; these are persistent contaminants, with an elimination half-life in the human body of 8-9.5 years. It is clear that the harmful effects may counteract any potential beneficial effects on cognitive function."

Apparently feedlot salmon are polluting more than just our ocean...

Wait for it, wait for it, wait for it............................... Soon the crowing of the roosters will wake up the feedlot crew, with Walling saying it's wrong and that's good enough.
* went to post and one of the feedlot shills beat me to it with some irrelevant and unsubstantiated emissions from the south end of a north bound cow .  :o

It is clear that harmful effects may counteract? Seems a little bit contradictory to me lol.

PS... where is the link to this report that the article talks about?
People often mis-quote or mis-read read things just so they can try to prove a point.

It's funny too... you are always contradicting yourself...

"Vegetable food is increasingly replacing fishmeal in farm-raised fish feeds"

That is right out of the same article you just posted. Earlier (in another thread) you said that fish farms were having a large impact on forage fish in the ocean being converted into food. So, if you are now taking this article as the truth, which is it, are we feeding our "feed-lot" salmon with forage fish and depleting the wild stocks, or are we feeding them vegetable food and therefore decreasing our IQ?

Lastly... once again... you missed the point that the whole article was about farm raised tilapia and catfish. Apparently you have also been mis-reading and mis-quoting to prove your own points... and your possy of anti-farm people seem to just read your statements and take them as truth rather than reading the articles posted as well... hmmmm... kinda sounds like what Morton is doing to the public.

I can tell this article is causing some folks to struggle with what they believed was true....

In summary if you want to preserve your IQ......   don't eat that stuff!  ???

If you are not concerned about your own IQ levels, let's at least look out for the little kids....

http://drcrinnion.com/just-say-no-to-farmed-salmon/

"Proponents of aquaculture (fish farming) are ready to point out that these levels are not necessarily a health hazard. However, studies that have looked at the effect of PCB intake on offspring appear to contradict that stance. There have been a number of studies that have measured maternal levels of PCBs and then followed the offspring for a number of years. Their findings are consistent that the higher the serum levels of maternal PCBs the greater the neurological deficits in the offspring.

In 1979 rice bran cooking oil that was contaminated with PCBs was used for a number of months in Taiwan. Children born to exposed mothers (including children born up to 6 years after the exposure) were then followed for persistent neuro-psychological problems. At 6 years post exposure the offspring scored an average of 6 IQ points lower than their older siblings who were themselves exposed to the PCBs. In addition they exhibited 23% greater rates of problem behavior and 15% greater levels of activity than their controls. By age 17 these children still showed significantly greater problems with behavior and had a persistent IQ reduction averaging 3 IQ points. This was true even in children born to mothers up to 6 years after their exposure."

http://www.albany.edu/ihe/salmonstudy/faqs.html

"There are steps consumers could take to reduce their risk if they were concerned about contaminant levels in farmed salmon. Individuals could limit their consumption to on average no more than one farmed salmon meal per month. However, consumers need to be aware that in some cases even that could exceed advised contaminant exposure levels."

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16251623

"However, young children, women of child-bearing age, pregnant women, and nursing mothers not at significant risk for sudden cardiac death associated with CHD but concerned with health impairments such as reduction in IQ and other cognitive and behavioral effects, can minimize contaminant exposure by choosing the least contaminated wild salmon or by selecting other sources of (n-3) fatty acids."

....just sayin

It appears to me that land based feed lots are not the answer to all the old anti-feed lot propaganda.
