The pier has been closed for awhile. I thought it was only temporary for repairs.

The pier was damaged during last December's high tide and storm surge that damaged the Stanley Park seawall. Closure is supposed to be temporary.

I used to fish there as a kid in the 70's before the Jericho beach pier was repaired.  You could only get to it during low tide and had to scramble across rocks and 2 x 4's.  Then you had to fish from the skeleton of the old pier.

It used to be amazing.  Crabbing was phenomenal, and it wasn't unheard of to get a skate, ling or a salmon.  And the flounder...let me tell you about the flounder!

Then in the early 80's, after they repaired the pier, it became a mecca for people who would come down and keep everything they caught.  Totally brutal.

They have also closed most of the fishing off the rocks in West Vancouver (lighthouse park, whytecliff, piccadilly place), and I believe the reason is the same.  People would leave with everything that they hooked.  Completely brutal.  It was like watching a drag net fishery operation.

If you want to have some fun catching flounder, go at about an hour before low tide on west Spanish banks and walk out to the navigation markers.  A good cast will take you to a drop off point about 5 meters from the marker.  Best bait is ghost shrimp dug in the mud flats.  Just watch for the incoming tide...

There are also some good beaches to coho fish later in the summer.

I guess you haven't seen the reports I've put up here Shawn-the ones that are complete with pictures-because as everyone knows without pictures it never happened -just like your mythical monster Squalus Acanthias never happened.

FYI-I have fished the Inside for 40 years now and there's only one place with Dogfish that size and that's Jedediah Island-or was because the commercial longline fishery cleaned them to feed  British and dogs that's what Dogfish is good for feeding people with bad teeth and mutts with long teeth.

I've caught dogfish that were over 5 feet off Quadra Island. I can believe they could get that big at Jericho. My thoughts are that maybe all the other predators in that area (rockfish, lings, greenling) that dogfish would compete with for food are fished out. That would leave more for the doggies, thus allowing them to grow larger. Just an idea, though.

I never knew dogfish was edible let alone made into fish and chips in the UK.
All dogfish I have seen caught were released right back into the sea as nobody wanted them.
Does it taste like white fish?
