How to: Blue Fox Vibrax treble hooks to single hooks
« on: October 22, 2011, 10:25:07 PM »

I was wondering if there were any other technique's to change treble hooks on Vibrax spinners to single hooks.
I read somewhere that you cut the eye of the treble,  insert a Siwash hook and use pliers to crimp the Siwash eye to close.
Anyone use a different technique's?
What do you use to cut the eye of the treble hook?

I like adding a split ring then the single hook.

The instructions are on the box
Use your pliers to cut the hook off and crimp the siwash hook on, simple.

i find the stock hook too big... change to a smaller hook size + the split ring for easier change.

Or you can purchase better Spinners for cheaper and forgo bolt cutting the giant treble off and putting the garbage spare hook they provide on.

For 5.99 to 6.99 I expect a quality hook on a lure.

That being said, consider using a split ring with a 2/0 or 3/0 top quality octopus hook on the back, I know very good spinner fisherman getting excellent hook up/landing ratio using this method.

All spinners should come with a swivel at the top and a spilt ring at the bottom, thats how to correctly build a spinner.

Having the swivel is key to stopping the dreaded line twist, that will surely come after catching a fish or twop without a swivel on your spinner.

Heres some pics of correctly designed spinners...........................

Hhaha.  Rod you're spinners are very nice.
But I don't think there is any one correct way to build a spinner.
Don't you think Blue Fox and Mepps have put significant time and money into research and development?  Neither use swivels up top or split rings on the bottom.

On my home made spinners, I do use a swivel at the top and attach the hook straight to the bottom loop of the wire.  I get virtually no line twist and the hooks sits just the way I want it.  If you watch a Virbax or Mepps on the retrieve, you'll see the hooks sits pointing perfectly upwards.  Similar to a jig hook.

To avoid line twist on a Vibrax, just use a leader and attach with a high quality swivel to the mainline.

-I think they put a lot of time into research but of the market.. they realize the majority of people are not in areas where single hook is required and that fishers in BC in particular are used to having to change the hook.
-Also an extra few cents per lure in labour and parts to add.. that is why they are willing (cheaper) for this market to include the single hook in the package.
-Like many that fiddle with the lures we will all have a favoured set up which may be different for depending on where and when you're fishing.
-I prefer the sickle type hooks on most.. in some instances I add the hook via wire a few inches behind the spinner.
-Haven't tried bentrod spinners yet but they look great and presume they will fish as well as they look.

Method myself and most of my Buddies on The Rock use:
Cut the treble, install split ring, follow by swivel (regardless whether there is a swivel up front or not) another split ring, then siwash. Works, and works well  ;)

Cheers,

Too bad it's not available in tackle shops. Cost too much to have them shipped by Canada Post.
