Well the curse of the new year is over...hoooray!!! i FINALLY caught something and it was on the fly, my first..(2) today..
After spending monday and weds. on the Vedder and getting two decent hook ups but break offs i was more discouraged then ever...(Weds. i even took an un-wanted bath in the river to boot)..i stopped by reaction fly on whatcom road and picked up some new wading boots to make sure the bath was only when i chose next time and gabbed again with the guys there. We talked at length about the Nooksack and ways to fish it successfully, So seeing as it's closing on Tuesday i decided i would hit it again today and try my new learned strategy....
My buddy and i got there around 10-10:30 and it was not a bad day, warmer then we expected but still with a bite to the air, not much wind to speak of either...i started my day with a single egg pattern, two tungsten weights and a small drift float and started working the run...about a half hour in...down goes the tiny float and i set the hook on my first ever fish on a fly rod....It put up a decent little fight and then suddenly gave up and came in to the shore...My buddy is not the fastest animal on two legs and while waiting for him to get up to me and get a picture i bent down and made sure the Dolly was still in good shape, she was and i tried to hold her in one hand which i did and popped the hook out....Dollys are kind of slimy compared to salmon and when she felt nothing pricking her in the mouth, she gave me a nod and flipped out of my hand and swam away....Well, i was glad she wasn't hurt but my feelings were as i didn't get a chance to take a picture of my first fishie this way....old man christmas wandered up and started giving me the gears about letting the fish go but what could i say....
Back at it we went...i switched over to another single egg pattern with a little white polar bear on it too and fished that from the top of the run down...I was chatting with my buddy who was having a smoke up on a log above me and i was in nearly the same spot when again i felt a fish smack my fly....this one put up a much more spirited fight...i thought i might have a small steelhead on as i saw one caught here last sunday as well and saw the silver flash immediately on the take...This time my buddy is scrambling down to get the camera from me and shouting.."Don't let it go"..."Don't let it go".....after a nice fight it too came to shore pretty quickly...( It's like when you hook um they fight like hell for 20- 30 seconds...head shakes and rolls, the whole deal..then they figure OK I'm caught and nearly swim to your feet)....I'm landing the fish, trying to hand off the camera and keep the thing in the water and happy at the same time..i turned and fell on my a$$ while this is all happening BUT did manage to keep the rod out, line tight and fish on...so here's a pic. Horrible yes, but what can you expect from a couple old guys flogging air?
