Hey all

hit the Vedder this morning to avenge the white whale I lost on Wednesday. More hooks, more gear, and all new tougher line - ready to do battle.

Waded out to my little bar, and set up a little river level indicator. Had the bar to myself the entire afternoon.

SHould have known that my failure to obtain INXS tickets this morning was bad karma. Second cast I had a nice silver pring on and run, but he went into the bushes, and that was that. Retie, and not a sniff for the rest of the afternoon. Everyone said the morning was great, but the afternoon looked like it was a real stinker.

Nice to have new gear, but crappy to miss the fish.

On another note, I have now entered into my 5th month of not successfully being able to cast my Abu Garcia C4. I bring tht thing everywhere I go, then I see how precise I have to be ont he cast, and i get cold feet and break out the old spinner. I need some serious help, or I am going to have to change my name to Birdnester.

Why don't you take your level wind to a local park and work on yuor casting there. Unpicking a birdsnest at the park certainly beats having to unpick one on the river, especially when the bite is on.

it may that yo are not using enough weight and the side adjuster is not set properly. when you release your thumb on the line for free fall the lure should make its way slowly down the guides. a few adjustment and it should be okay. don't worry aquaboy..all it takes is practice.

I also did the vedder thing today. What a stinker day alot of fisherman got the word early that fishing was crap or something there was no people at all specialy for a saturday!!!!!! . I went from peach down to raillway bridge casting every pool every run and all i got to show for the day was rotten chum , and two fish i didnt even get to see one shook the hook other one took the hook. My reel is tottaly screwed i guess its all those years of abuse and not taking care of it. Oh well getting tired of tackle i think im just gona buy that fly rod now.

I had the same problems useing a baitcaster i took me a few times to get the hang of it. I took it out in the backyard and pratices and now i have no problems. When your just starting like i was adjust the tension tighter than you need(not the drag!) It helps alot thats the key. As you get better take more and more tension off.

ya its frustrating...i remeber about 15 years ago i did a trip with my parents down south, with the idea of fishing for some bass and coarse fish...i'd just got a nice little shimano baitcast reel, and was excited to use it....nothing but birdsnests the whole trip!

the way i got past it was by putting more pressure than i needed to on it with my thumb while casting, and went for shorter casts....when i started to get used to it that way i gradually just started lettiing pressure off.  When you get in tune with how it feels you can cast extremely accurately with it using your thumb to slow it.....unless this isnt your first baitcast reel, and this ones just a POS!!

Aquaboy!  Maybe you have too much line!  I found that when I was learning that if the spool was too full I ended up with too many birdsnest! Just an idea!

Or, maybe you have too little line.  That will also make it hard to cast properly.  The amount of line should come up to about 1/8" before the top of the spool.  Also, check your backlash control.

To much line may also be the problem i did that the first time i loaded up a baitcaster. In the end i had to cut it all off because of birdsnest -20$

goto a park and practice there , it will come to you easier when there is no pressure to hit that sweet spot on the run . Also , do as others said and make sure the adjustments are set correctly . don't set it too loose to begin . Once you get a good cast in then you will know the feeling and it will come easy . Practice practice practice , and don't make long cast either , start short first . good luck

I hit the vedder today at day break and started at the lower river. It was really slow until about 9:30AM, with only one hit till that point in time, when whamo the float is buried. I get a good hook set and a bright coho erupts at the surface. After a short battle I land a 6lb wild and send it back on its way. Its my fourth outing to the Vedder this season and finally I land the elusive quarry. The bite was on for about 30 min after the first one and I hook several more fish but don't succeed in landing another.

Later in the day I check out the upper river. I manage to hook about half a dozen spring and land a 15lb female which is in decent shape. I decide to keep it for eating. It also yields some beautiful roe which will be processed into bait and ikura.

Re baitcaster.  I got a great tip from a pro once.  Take the baitcaster, pay out 100 feet of line then use electricians tape to tape down the line on the spool.  Wind in the line, you can now go to the park and practice casting without the chance of birdnesting the entire spool.

Once you are comfortable remove the tape and head to your local river.

Also went this morning for a short period of time.  Hooked on to 7 springs and 1 chum.  I didn't see any Ho's and DFO counter person has none recorded either (says its quite slow the last couple of days).

I did keep a 14 lb doe spring that was the cleanest i've ever caught off the Vedder.  More roe for me to cure

After filletting the fish.......i was surprised to see it was marbled.  Red/white meat.

Nice fish Fishin Addict!  And a "marble" too.  Right on.  Are those marbles better than whites?  I imagine they must taste similar to reds?  Anyway - I've noticed that lots of the springs in the vedder are very chrome.  There also seems to be a higher proportion of reds/marbles.  I've hooked a bunch this year and I've been very surprised to see how chrome they are!  Usually by now - they're turning gray or olive/green (the whites) - but I've hooked a few that seem to have a slight red/brown tinge to them.  Anyway - I wonder if these chrome springs are a sign that they've just come in and are late.  I hope so - as this could mean that the coho are late too!  I've hooked a few coho - but certainly not very many for this time of year!  Maybe everything is a bit late.  Remember the sockeye?

thats a chromer nice fish bunus with the marble it has more red in it then white look like
