Powdered paint...this stuff is just too cool!
« on: October 06, 2005, 08:53:06 PM »

Some of you may remember I was talking about ordering some powdered paint...well it arrived and I have "painted" up several bare jig heads.  I must say this stuff is so cool...quite fun to work with and it makes for a very nice touch before dressing a jig.  Suppose it would work well on spoons and spinners too.

Any how if you havent heard of this stuff, its like a colored vinyl powder.  You heat you metal object up to 350C and then pick it up with a pair of pliers, swoosh it around in the powder and voila! a beautiful new lure emerges!

I'll post a pic or 2 of my jig heads and tied jigs in the next day or 2.

If anyone wants to buy some, give me a PM or emial and we can talk.  I got 32 oz in a variety of salmon and steelhead colors and with 1 oz doing 200 jigs, I would like to sell some to defray my costs.

I think you mean to heat it up to 350 F.  Anyway, I use this stuff to build my lures all the time.  It's great and easy.  One thing I have found is that if you bake it for 20 minutes again after dipping them in the powder, the paint will be much harder.  Good luck with your jig heads.  BR

BR, you are right...350F

Dennis, I simply used the oven.  I preheated it to 350 and left the jigs hanging off the front bar of the oven rack.  once dipped I hung the dipped jig back on the rack and grabbed a bare one.  While I finished the lot the rest continued to cure in the oven.  A couple I took out and redipped them. took maybe 10 minutes to do 15 jigs, its really easy stuff to work with.

I found that tapping the excess off was a good step too.

And yes my wife was out of the house at the time!   8)

I have some old faded wood-bodied flatfish.  Would that stuff (powdered paint) work for them as well?

You simply have to heat your jig for 4-10 seconds before putting it in the powder.

Sure, buzzbombs would managed just fine...anything metal.

I dont know if I would want to heat an older wood lure to 350f  as well if the wood had any moisture in it, it may affect the ability of the paint to stick too.  If its an old junker I guess it would be worth trying.

Instead of using the oven and facing the wrath of my wife, I bought a cheap toaster oven.

can the jigs be suspended?  If the rigging is there, that would be ideal as you dont need to heat up a large oven for a handful of jigs...I have to keep my eye open for one at a garage sale.

The one I bought has a little metal heat sheild under the top heat element.  I hang them from there.  Otherwise, I was going to drill a small hole on both sides inside the oven to string a wire across to hang the hooks on.

Curiouse, never used a jighead before. Do you flyfish with those or just tie to mainline use similarly to a spoon lure?
