Title: Powdered paint...this stuff is just too cool!
Post by: Gooey on October 06, 2005, 08:53:06 PM
Some of you may remember I was talking about ordering some powdered paint...well it arrived and I have "painted" up several bare jig heads.  I must say this stuff is so cool...quite fun to work with and it makes for a very nice touch before dressing a jig.  Suppose it would work well on spoons and spinners too.

Any how if you havent heard of this stuff, its like a colored vinyl powder.  You heat you metal object up to 350C and then pick it up with a pair of pliers, swoosh it around in the powder and voila! a beautiful new lure emerges!

I'll post a pic or 2 of my jig heads and tied jigs in the next day or 2.

If anyone wants to buy some, give me a PM or emial and we can talk.  I got 32 oz in a variety of salmon and steelhead colors and with 1 oz doing 200 jigs, I would like to sell some to defray my costs.

I think you mean to heat it up to 350 F.  Anyway, I use this stuff to build my lures all the time.  It's great and easy.  One thing I have found is that if you bake it for 20 minutes again after dipping them in the powder, the paint will be much harder.  Good luck with your jig heads.  BR

how do you heat up a jig head safely to 350 degrees?

BR, you are right...350F

Dennis, I simply used the oven.  I preheated it to 350 and left the jigs hanging off the front bar of the oven rack.  once dipped I hung the dipped jig back on the rack and grabbed a bare one.  While I finished the lot the rest continued to cure in the oven.  A couple I took out and redipped them. took maybe 10 minutes to do 15 jigs, its really easy stuff to work with.

I found that tapping the excess off was a good step too.

And yes my wife was out of the house at the time!   8)

I have some old faded wood-bodied flatfish.  Would that stuff (powdered paint) work for them as well?

You simply have to heat your jig for 4-10 seconds before putting it in the powder.

Sure, buzzbombs would managed just fine...anything metal.

I dont know if I would want to heat an older wood lure to 350f  as well if the wood had any moisture in it, it may affect the ability of the paint to stick too.  If its an old junker I guess it would be worth trying.

Instead of using the oven and facing the wrath of my wife, I bought a cheap toaster oven.

can the jigs be suspended?  If the rigging is there, that would be ideal as you dont need to heat up a large oven for a handful of jigs...I have to keep my eye open for one at a garage sale.

The one I bought has a little metal heat sheild under the top heat element.  I hang them from there.  Otherwise, I was going to drill a small hole on both sides inside the oven to string a wire across to hang the hooks on.

Curiouse, never used a jighead before. Do you flyfish with those or just tie to mainline use similarly to a spoon lure?

If you flyfish with those, you'll hear a loud crack sound as the rod is being whipped towards the water... ;D You can either tie it onto the mainline of a spinning reel, and jig it after casting. You can also fish it under a float, just like what you would do normally when drifting roe or wool.

Those look so much like flys.  :-[
So they're really heaviely weighted eh?

1/2oz at least.

That is heavy. when would you use those? Any advantage compared to using roe/wool?

I'll leave that question to others. I rarely use them. :)

I have caught fish using jigs. I find they work better in slower water.

The jigs pictured there are 1/4 oz - same weight as a #3 blue fox I believe. I make jigs in the following sizes: 1/8,1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 which are then painted and tied to suit  the target fish.

3/8 and 1/2 are really heavy...too much for most applications.  I like 1/4 in most scenarious.  I fish jigs on a 9 foot bait caster or spinning rod.  I intend to float them more often this year.

FA is mostly right, slow deep poosl are best for  jigs but they work well in lots of other applications too.  I remember walking into a gong show at the hatchery canal (chehalis).  No on was catching anything (roe, wool, blades) and my jigs pulled out 6 coho for my dad and I.  Jigs are so lively, I think thats what makes them so effective.  Roe or wool have little movement to them and I think that coho being such an aggressive fish, they respond to all the movement of a jig.

Last year at on the way (in a realativley fast seem), pug pumper and I were hammering some really nice clean chum on my jigs.  The one that seems to work best on the chum is the one on the top left in the pic of 6 different jigs.

I have heard of guys float fishing their favourite salmon and steelhead flies so BwiBwi you are right, the purple one is bascially an egg sucking leech tied onto a jig!  I am going to tie popsicle jigs for steelhead season too.  Infact I have committed to getting a steelhead on one of my jigs this season.

I am tracking down a supplier that makes circle jig hooks...I am totally pump as they will allow me to fish coho from a pool infested with chum without the snagging issues.

If anyone wants to order some, just PM me, I would be happy to tie some up for who ever.

Sorry rod, just trying to gauge interest before putting an ad up.

FA, I guess it would depend on how many and what design.

For example, the chum jig I make (upper left in the pic of six) is very quick to tie.  The jig with a marabou tail and a chenille body is a little more time intensive, and the ones with a chenile body and hackle take the most time.

As well, I can stack the marabou when tying it in or palmer (wrap) it.  Palmering takes much more time then stacking but gives a bushier tail (IMO).

I believe the jig hooks I have right now are Mustad...I bought a portion of a commercial box off a guy on Ebay some time ago.  I am looking at ordering some Owner Hooks from addicted to steel for future tying.

Please PM me if you want to discuss further.
