Chilliwack/Vedder sept 27
« on: September 27, 2005, 01:39:43 PM »

Did more exploring than fishing today since it was my fist time up that way. Started at the vedder
crossing at 7:00 for a couple of hours... nothing.....then went down to the railway bridge for a couple more hours.....nothing.....then went down to KW bridge just to see what everyone has been talking about and didn't even bother putting my line in the water.

It was good to see some of the spots in person that I've heard about. Now I look forward to finding a few of the lesser known ones.

Fished the whole time with pink roe and float. The water was really clear and I saw allot of Pinks swimming by, but nothing else. Only springs and coho I saw were all held up at KW getting beaten. There were allot of big Springs down there. Hopefully some rain will move them up.

Didn't see anything landed by anyone who was really fishing.

Chilliwack River September 27th
« Reply #1 on: September 27, 2005, 01:43:41 PM »

Water is even lower than Sunday now, hopefully the forecasted rain will rise it a bit. I started at first light, managed to hook and kept a chinook jack on the third cast. A few casts later, another chinook jack, which I released. Not long after, one big white chinook came up (really high up! I had my float depth set at 3 feet) and grabbed a big chunk of roe and took me for a ride. That fish eventually peeled just about all the line off before it broke off, taking everything (the Drennan, etc) with it. ::)

From 7:30am to 8:30am, I had a series of bites, which I was very sure were coho. I missed every single one of them. ::) At one point, three drifts, three hits, three times the float went over my head as I set the hook.

Trout Slayer showed up from downstream of me with a nice chinook jack as well. We fished together for awhile before I took off. Here's a photo of our jacks.

Few things to remember
  • You need a freshwater fishing licence when fishing the Chilliwack River.
  • You need to purchase a salmon conservation stamp if you intend to keep your salmon.
  • Daily quota for pink salmon is four fish below the Vedder Crossing in Chilliwack River.
  • Daily quota for hatchery coho salmon is four fish in Chilliwack River. Hatchery coho salmon have no adipose fin.
  • Daily quota for chum salmon is one fish in Chilliwack River.
  • Daily quota for chinook salmon is four fish in Chilliwack River, but only one maybe over 62cm.
  • You may only keep four salmon (mixed species) in total per day.
  • Only a single barbless hook is allowed.
  • You must release any sockeye and wild coho carefully.
  • Pink salmon have large oval spots on their back and tail. Sockeye salmon do not have spots. Chinook salmon have tiny black spots on its back and tail. Coho salmon have tiny black spots on its back and upper tail, and white gum.
  • Please note that some sockeye salmon in the Chilliwack River also do not have an adipose fin.
  • Complete Chilliwack River salmon regulations can be found on this page.
  • Please phone DFO Chilliwack 604-702-2278 if you observe a violation.
  • Make sure you have a good fillet knife to clean your catch and a cooler with ice to keep your it fresh.

So if FA takes my Drennan, can I attempt to snag him and get it back? ;)

FA, you're too late. I phoned Chris already and he is already on his way to snatch that float. ;)

Truecast, I fished several different spots today, all were downstream from Lickman Road. :) Best to find waters where you'll be alone when the water is this clear. Today we basically fished alone so the run wasn't spooked by people walking into the water etc.

That looks more like a nook than a chum you can see the mouth. Might be wrong though

If you snag me you're going to end up with a broken rod and a lost Drennan ! ;D
