Isn't there a saying which goes something like "the prettier the more deadly"?  ???

I dunno, that looks a lot like an Amanita muscaria. In Denmark we call it a red fly mushroom, poisonous but not deadly.  :-X

Not sure though.....it being a canadian mushroom and all.... ???  ;D

Those look like amanitas (muscarias) to me too.  These will get you off, but they also might make you very sick, or even kill you.  Supposedly people in Siberia eat (or ate) one strain of these to get visions, and it was so popular (and the mushrooms so scarce) that after the shaman ate them, he would pass his pee on to his assistants so they could also get off.   gross.  I think of these pretty mushrooms about the same way I think of toluache sagrado (Datura, Jimson weed).  Both have psychoactive properties, but you probably won't enjoy the trip (from what I hear), and it takes you so close to death that you might end of staying for more than just a short visit.  I would be careful even handling those amanitas.

Running your lawn mower over them will not get rid of them, if you want to get rid you must completely pull out all the roots and a bit of earth surrounding them.

I’m not sure even that would work, since the mushrooms mycelium is probably spread out in most of your garden already. What you see is just a tiny piece of the actual fungus, kind of like an apple on an apple tree. I’d say just remove the mushrooms you see so kids don’t go nibble on them, the mushrooms will probably be back next year or even this year again. If you really wanted to get rid of them I think you’d have to use pesticides, which is not really worth it in my opinion.

Amanita muscaria? Is it possible that the agronomist is right for once? :D

That shows how much confidence you have in me....... ::)  ;D

You are a biologist, you should know your fungi!  ;)  ;D
