Rodney have a question.
You give " like" when others comment on your vids.
My comment on youtube under your vid never gets a heart.
Why?

Is it possible to fish for halibut and cod like that closer to Vancouver? I'd love to try that out but only have a 14' boat. Is my only option booking a guide or ?

Think they were fishing in the middle of Georgia Straight.
14 ft car topper or runabout? There are car toppers & there are car toppers.
Some better freeboard than others.
Had many boats & 14 ft car topper with 9.9 hp  fishing at Howe Sound & English Bay ...hot calm sunny days...
And out in a 13 ft roundabout but after many trips /yrs of boating I can tell you it's very risky being out there with those sized boats. Winds can come up / currents / tide changes ...
If ya go out too often odds are ya may regret it.

As far as are halibut closer to Vancouver? Not sure on that one.

In vid though those halibuts seem to use their body shape to good use to make them difficult to reel in.
Ling cod ugly looking face. Like the Predator alien in the movie.

Not really. Areas 28 and 29, with the exception of some sub-areas around the Gulf Islands, are closed for rockfish and lingcod fishing due to conservation concerns. Halibut fishing is open, but they are rare, the closest productive spot is down near Victoria.

I can't comment on how safe the 14' boat is out there.

If you just want to get halibut, you could hop on the ferry to Victoria and go out with a guide, split the cost with 2 or 3 other friends. Gord from Sea Ghost based out of Pedder Bay has always been good when we went out with him.

Nice video, Rod. I'm not sure if the lodges where I work will be operating this summer, so videos like this take me there vicariously. Some guys love those paddletails! And it's great when you drop right on top of the fish right off the bat. The fish, especially halibut, move around a lot, no matter how good the waypoints.

Definitely highly mobile, and not always on the bottom. These fish were as high as 100ft off the bottom when they were chasing the jigs up.

No idea how the summer is going to go, especially after yesterday's announcements by both the province and fed that we should expect this to continue until mid July in the best scenario.

Murphys fishing grounds are getting rapped by the five nations anyways. Won't be long before there's nothing there, Look at Nogs post.
