Red flesh chum salmon
« on: November 11, 2017, 08:22:26 PM »

I caught this chum salmon at Stave yesterday.  The colour of the meat is rather bright red than the usual pale red colour.  Has anyone seen this before??

Yes, often, especially with Squamish fish, and in particular with males. I've never killed a Stave chum, so I can't comment on that river's fish.

If you take a chum out of the sea, it often has red flesh.  From your image it looks like the fish was quite bright, so I think it is fairly normal.  As mentioned bright Squamish chum taken below the Cheakamus have only been in fresh water for a couple of days and are often red rather than pale pink.  Damn good eating as well.

Thank you all for your comments.

I just bought a Little Chief Smoker.  I am going to try making chum candy for the first time. Hopefully it's going to turn out good :) :)

Hi,

Yes that was me  :).  Thanks you so much.  Had you not found that knife, it would be the 4th one I lost  :(

Did you catch any fresh chum ?

I headed to the Slough after and saw so many people catching coho on flies.

I know that nobody likes to give up their spot on the net, but...

Is the slough you went to in the Stave area/system?

Geez... how about you just take a drive on the north side of the Fraser and explore.
So you want to save gas, use Google Maps.
Either way, it won't take you long on your journey to find the answer your looking for!!

He asked about the Stave River System.  SYSTEM! Not spot, side, mouth, but is "the slough" part of the Stave system. I have no idea as I know of a few "Sloughs" so don't know which one VirtualFisher was refering to but think he could say yes or no.

To anserr the question about Chum Flesh. I have seen it more this year. Also noticed the eggs are a lot more bright Red/Orange this year than usual pale (after helping in a few egg takes for local hatchery)

I would assume he is referring to Nicomen (dewdney) slough, it's no secret spot but no it is not part of the Stave system. It's about a 15 min drive from Stave heading east

Thank you.

I expect I'm not getting back into the river again this year, but maybe next season:)

You are right.  It's unbelievably good.  I just got it smoked yesterday after 3 days from the brine  and 1 day hang to dry. Smoked chum salmon, beer, and Hockey Night in Canada on CBC,... life is so good !! :D

Anyone notice similar with coho this season? One of my does from the Stave slough this year had the brightest firmest flesh Ive seen in a long time. It  baked up like smoked salmon it was so rich, and just covered with albumin. In contrast I had one larger doe elsewhere, not many larger coho this season for me on the North of the Fraser, with pale flesh and not at all appetizing baked fillet. Also funny that almost all my adults were does. I did not think I was so good at attracting females~
