Grouse Hunting 2017
« on: September 14, 2017, 03:47:40 PM »

A banner year for Blue's this year, saw close to 30 and got a 2 day limit and 1 willow on the ways to the 55+ games in Vernon playing badminton. Hitting 2 birds with one stone you could say.

It was a golden day all around, picking up one in Competitive Singles with 3 straight victories over the 3 opponents I faced be it 2 of the matches going 3 games.

Grouse hunting continues to be great, best I have seen in years. Now after a large buck, a smart one eluded me last night, I will give him a go tonight again. Will get a couple of more grouse I would think too.

I estimate I have seen 100 so far this year, one under a limit yesterday coming down from the mountain, getting cold up there was -10 the other night.

Hi, Chris. I am new in BC hunting. Do you use .22 rifle or shotgun to hunt grouse? When is the best time to find these birds during the day? Thanks

I have found a few hours after day break and a 1-2 hours before sun down to be best in areas I hunt. After they have a big snack they will wander onto logging roads and trails looking for pebbles and sand to put in their crop to help digest their diet.

Thanks for the tips. I used to hunt for pheasants with a 12 gauge shotgun in Nova Scotia. Do you use shotgun or .22 rifle here in BC?

Depends. You can use either. If you have a smaller gauge I'd go with that, but a 12 will work if that's all you have.

Often the birds will flush into a tree within eyesight or if you spot them without them flushing you can get em with the 22.

Grouse are incredibly stupid. If you spot one up ahead, stop and they will isusally let you take a crack at them.

Just got back from deer hunting no bucks for me yet, still plenty of grouse around. Shot 4 more on the last trip for the pot. The last trip I did not use a camp stove as I just cooked over a fire. Lots of people cutting firewood leave the bark behind, makes a great fire.

It's all right, Chris. You are all good teachers. Nice to know you had a good hunting trip bringing us good news of grouse.

There are fantastic bird guns that have a .22 on top and a 20 gauge below.

They are a little heavy (the 20 gauge barrel is fairly thick) but will cover any grouse situation you have.

Pick them out of the trees with the .22 (headshot preferred).
Knock them down with the 20 gauge if they take flight (you'll be eating bird shot sometimes, though).
