Pick them out of the trees with the .22 (headshot preferred).
I'm a pretty good shot, and I know my .22 packs a whole lot less heat than my .30-06, but shooting upwards towards the sky sounds pretty dangerous.

Am I being overly cautious?

When you are up in the mountains I donot think it is a problem as no houses around.
