Cultas Lake Fishery
« on: February 16, 2015, 05:38:42 PM »

I wanted to take the boat out and do some trolling at one of the lakes 'round here tomorrow. I've done Alouette, but nowhere else. Is Cultas a good lake to do some trolling for trout/koke etc.? Any other lakes around (1.5 hr max from Vancouver) that I can try? Thanks in advance!

Cultus Lake would be a great option as fishing pressure is virtually absent at this time of year.. The recent Pikeminnow culls have improved opportunities for char, cutthroat, a few rainbow, even some residual coho.  Try around the creek mouths and the lake outlet ;)

Not to give it away...Go to far end troll beach all the way to creek mouth to cliffs and do the loop. Non stop action. Trout. Coho. Puke minnow.

It sounds like you best refer to the current synopsys/regulations for your answer. I don't think you can keep the Green Sturgeon.

Best to look under Cultus, not Cultas. ;)

Cultus Lake's regulations allow you to retain wild trout and char, but personally I would let them go as they can be anadromous. Take the hatchery-marked cutthroat trout retained in the photo below. No hatchery raised cutthroat trout are released into Cultus Lake, so a fish like this one most likely came from one of the other streams in the Fraser Valley where they are released by the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery.

I think they are pretty rare but when they did the netting program I believe they netted and recorded a Green Sturgeon. I was also sure I saw a TV program where one of these guys goes around the world to find unusual fish and to learn about their characteristics. Same guy who was measuring electric eel electrical discharge levels after trapping them.

That recent netting report was posted somewhere.

Then again, I do have very vivid, detailed but unusual dreams and I sometimes forget which is real and what was dream.  ;D Pretty sure this was real, not like the Mill Lake Pike.  ::)

I'll have a look around sometime because I remember seeing the picture. It was thinner longer in proportions to the whites and I thought the snout was longer and quite curved upwards. It was a short one 3-4' long and very distinct from the white sturgeon.

I remember the show started fishing in the Columbia inthe US then they were in the Fraser and finally in Cultus (or so I thought) Dang-it, I could be wrong.

No Pike in Cultus - not even Mill Lake.  :-[

I guess I'm wrong about the green sturgeon in Cultus Lk. I see where one netted in Cultus was a mistaken identity and which it was proven to be a White. But now I question what I saw on the television show. Sorry.

The sturgeon in question was very dark in color so the netting crew thought it might have been a green; DNA analysis showed it to be a white.  The fish caught and safely released was closer to 6' and larger sturgeon have been seen around the lake outlet dock areas.
