Pink Video - Pinks on Dries
« on: December 11, 2014, 03:13:30 PM »

Maybe not my best video, but it'll have to do until next year when I can hopefully put a better one together!

Here's some looks at the fly used in the video:

Something to try for next year to make the pinks a bit more fun!

Cheers,
Dan

Very very cool!  ;D
Was your retrieve generally quite quick? Or did it vary?

Screw 'whats-her-my friend', but you should have broken the internet for that post!  :)

Did they strike when the fly was not moving, or did you have to twitch and retrieve it to trigger a response?

Also, why did you tie in the black foam (i presume) piece under the pink/orange foam.  Was that just for extra floatation and/or to help create more wake?

What size hook?  I hope you do a fly tying video?  :)

Sorry for the flood of questions but that was very cool, and I want to give it a go this year.  I think that's going to be a great way of fly fishing for pinks, while limiting accidental snagging and flossing of fish which can happen a lot when using a sinking line with big schools of fish in in a river.

Thanks again.

the pink poly wog was the first dry fly specifically for Pacific Salmon and has caught Coho and chum as well as pinks. Just about any spun deer hair pattern with a shell back of foam will work as will a heavily dressed muddle using pink deer hair. For the most part pinks that are a ways from the salt don't respond as well as fish off the beach. Last year I switched to a popper after hooking 40 fish one morning on the Vedder. I got lots of swirls and follows but hooked one fish in an hour. That was enough though. Just cast it downstream and strip it back much like popping for bass.

Was your retrieve generally quite quick? Or did it vary?

Surprisingly, the best retrieve was very slow, nearly a figure 8 retrieve, just enough to get it to create a solid wake. Some days they definitely liked a hard pop with a small pause before the next one.

Generally they would only take it while moving. That last part before it takes a look at the fly though, the fish smashed it after I stopped stripping and let it sit there for a second.

Also, why did you tie in the black foam (i presume) piece under the pink/orange foam.  Was that just for extra floatation and/or to help create more wake?

The black foam causes a lot more of a wake. My buddies were just doing the shell back flies, and this version of a popper was hooking up around 3 to every 1 they were getting. I find these flies create more of an air bubble type effect in front of them, rather than just a wake - even at slow speeds.

What size hook?  I hope you do a fly tying video?  :)

Hook was a size 4 saltwater gammy hook. I don't have any fly tying videos quite yet. I might put together a step by step one of these days though if there is interest.

Thanks for the comments everyone! Definitely give it a try, it's great fun!

Cheers,
Dan

If this is what you call a poor video, I can only imagine what a "good" one is like by your standards!  :o :o :o

Very, very cool Dan. Can I book a trip with you?  ;)

You'll see some good ones here eventually... I just need to find the time  ;D

And yes, but not for money. Just come on out and lets go for a fish! Maybe one day I'll take on some real bookings hahaha

basically the flies pictured are 'Gurglers':
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-dyWV4MqXQ

http://midcurrent.com/videos/tying-a-gurgler/

Basically, but they are not... As said above, they produce a lot more action on the surface than a typical gurgler, and have had much better results used along side a typical gurgler. They wake better, pop better, and create an air bubble in front, rather than the typical wake gurglers produce. Feel free to stay with gurglers and show how well they work, I'd love to see more videos of this as I love top-water action!

I haven't tried it in rivers, as I do not target pinks once they get to fresh water. I rarely target pinks period...
