Falkland Islanders call for referendum on plans for massive salmon farm

The 3,500 population is divided over the venture, which would bring investment and jobs, but critics claim the environmental cost would be too high ands data provided.

“It is then the people who will get to decide what happens in their own country,” said Sally Poncet, of SFF. She says she has lost confidence in the consultation process, which began on 7 August and will run until 30 October.

Reports commissioned by the Falklands government as part of the consultation are based on unverifiable data provided by Unity Marine, Poncet claimed. There is “insufficient information” on the impact that the industry would have on the islands, she said.

Aquaculture is depleting the oceans: A farmed salmon can consume more than six times its weight in wild fish

The rapid growth of the industry has increased demand for fishmeal and fish oil, creating environmental and social costs that are often felt far from the consumers who buy the final products

Never ceases to surprise me the extent to which "Elmo" has a luxury condo in the minds of so many pro-salmon people. They hang on her every word and can't stop talking about her and what she says.
