Buntzen Lake, May 6th 2012
« on: May 07, 2012, 09:19:25 AM »

A friend has recently taken up an interest in fishing, and has been asking me to take him out pretty much every weekend this spring.  We've made it out twice, both times to Como Lake, where we haven't had much luck.

Buntzen is such a beautiful location, nestled amongst the heavily treed hills, and the water is so clear and cold!  Not many fish were moving on this trip, but we decided to kick around our float tubes anyway in hopes of enticing a fish.

30 minutes in and we hadn't had a touch, so we started kicking towards another location on the lake.  Not long after that decision, my rod bucked in my hand and it was fish on!  This fish pulled far harder than any others I've caught from Buntzen, and my blood was racing.  My buddy was laughing like a little kid, we hadn't caught anything in previous trips and he was pretty stoked to see that going fishing actually could lead to catching a fish once in a while!  lol

Unfortunately the fish came unbuttoned shortly after I hooked up, and the we went another 45 minutes without a take after that.  Finally I decided to switch flies, and as I was stripping in my olive micro-leech to change it, WHAM!  another bite!  This fish wasn't as lucky as the previous one, and 5 minutes later I had a nice little 11" trout to hand.  I held her up for a quick photo, and then let her swim back into the depths.

That was the last bite of the day though, even though others around us kept hooking up we had no such luck.    We couldn't stay long anyway as my buddy had a dinner date with his fiance, but it was a great day to be out and I'm sure we'll be back again.

No, they never really got active on the surface.  The water appears to have warmed up substantially from when I was last there back in April, but still not many fish showing.  The takes were surprisingly savage though, which was nice.  :)

I imagine with the warm weather we're supposed to be getting this week and a steady barometer things might change for the better though?

I find those fish don't really jump that much at Buntzen during the day, especially if it is really sunny. As soon as the hills on the west side shade the lake in the evening hours, they start coming up. The early gate closure time makes it pretty challenging if you are fishing from a boat because you only have 30 minutes or so to catch that surface action before they sound the horn to warn about the closure.

Last year we were there on one sunny day. Nothing was biting, then they started coming up when it got shaded so I took Nina's rod... ;D Have to post the vid up again. ;D

hey Tex,
I had pretty good fishing on Buntzen Sunday afternoon, I was in the small white pram with wood trim. I was using wet lines with leeches mostly and caught some nice fish.
The Eastern shoreline down by the first narrows was the hot spot for me. I saw two guys in tubes down there among the other boats. I have noticed that the stocked fish fight much harder this year than in previous years, multiple jumps and runs etc, must be feeding them turbo pellets ! With this warmer weather coming fishing will definitely pick up !

That was us!  Nice to have met you in that case!  lol

You were definitely one of the guys hooking up - with regularity!  It was driving my buddy crazy, hahaha...  I was the fellow wearing the orange/white ballcap in the tube, but buddy was the Kiwi in the straw cowboy hat, kicking in the other tube.

Thank you for the report! Hope you have a chance to take your buddy out again with this beautiful weather. I may be out there on a float on Thursday / Friday fly fishing.

Rod - you totally had a smirk when you connected!!!
