A standard bench vise, like the ones in a muffler shop, should do fine.

Totally agree with Poper !! He could not have been more specific !!!!  Thanks for the Socials Study lesson , Sandman , however ,  it goes way beyond their rights in a treaty -- its called ethics and morality for all of us.m They use that fishery as a food source and I would like to put fish on the table as well and celebrate with a good glass of wine !! way to go Poper!!!!!

Not to justify what they are doing but they are legally entitled to catch their food pretty much any way they choose. I'm quite sure many, many hundreds of thousands of salmon disappear each year from illegal netting on the Fraser R. by natives. The Cap is just a very, very small piece of the pie.

Sad to see and even sadder to realize that it happens right under our noses year in and year out without repercussions. That's why natives would love to see recreational fishing banned on certain sections of the Fraser. If no one's there to see it was a crime committed. Of course Not

As I said, Chumhunter, the right of natives as a people to harvest fish "any way they chose" is rooted in the history of the land.  The reality of individual natives abusing the resource and their own rights is no different than the morons on just about every river that snag fish and abuse the fish they catch and release.  That does not make all recreational fishermen immoral nor does it make the concept of a recreational fisher unethical. You take the bad with the good. Natives DO have rights that are different than "the rest of us," but that does not make them immune to the lack of ethics and morality in individuals that seems to plague all cultures.  When a member of the First Nations is exercising their right to harvest fish, it makes no difference if they use a net, spear or a treble hook with lead wrapped around it.  Obviously the best method would be to beach seine or construct a weir and then pick and chose the fish for harvest and release the rest unharmed to spawn, but this is simply not always possible, so a hook and line is just fine.  However, should a member of the First Nations abuse a resource, take more fish than can be sustainable, then they are no different than anyone else doing the same.  It is shameful and unfortunate, but not enough to condemn the whole lot.
