It was a rainy drippy day yesterday but these two visitors brightened it up nicely.

I hope they cheer your day up too!

Things are active around the feeders these days and the hummingbirds seem to be more tolerant of me shooting.  Here are some shots from yesterday.

Wow, I think it's time for a Dragonspeed's FWR birding photography course.  I would be the first registered student.

The Steller's Jays are such characters.  I love to watch them try and grab a peanut from my feeder.  They almost hover sometimes :D  So many people mis-ID them as Blue Jays.  TOTALLY different animal.

Lesson #1 be your own harshest critic.  Don't accept that you have the best shot of something.  Keep working on a BETTER one.  (like fishing - who wants the 8lb Coho when you can get the 10 lber :D )

Thanks guys.

3 hours of sitting still paid off. The Steller's Jays are starting to almost come closer than MFD... Still working on feeding by hand... They aren't THAT comfortable with me yet.

Comments and Critique welcome.

Rufous Hummingbirds - a study

Yesterday afternoon was a great day for watching my backyard birds. I sat and watched the hummers zip in and out and the adult male chasing off pretenders to his throne... A few shots from the afternoon's watching:

D S your pics are my favorite part of Rods site lol and alwas cheer me up, like looking at a local version of National Geographic.
My friend forgot her big Canon with the zoom on our walk tonight but I had my pocket camera. We stopped to admire a bird of prey sitting on a post when we heard some weird squack caw sound repeating and getting closer. Then this creature appeared and flew overhead.I have seen only one or two of them despite their nesting in Pitt Meadows/Polder.

Thanks Leadbelly!

I only ever see the sandhill cranes when I'm out at Reifel... Very interesting birds.

Welcome to FWR, and to the photo side!

Lovely shot of the peacock and good composition.  The ones I see always seem to be just walking around dragging their tails!

Cheers!

Thanks, I'll probably be posting more in this section than any other for the first while, lol.  I seem to have better results taking pictures than fishing, lol.  But I'm here to learn, and I've got some great info from here already!!  You have some very nice shots too!

Last night, I saw a Downy sitting on my balcony rail.. very unusual to see them on a horizontal surface.  Then I noticed one on my feeder as well.  Soon after, the one on the feeder came down to the rail and did the "here's your food - I pre-chewed it for you" thing for junior.

I noticed that junior certainly still had some of his young down and was reluctant to jump onto the feeder. They stayed around for about 10 minutes. I wish there had been more light and that I didn't have to shoot through my glass door :(
