2009 Fraser Chinook Forecast
« on: April 23, 2009, 07:36:41 PM »

I haven't seen anyone else post anything on this yet, but it looks like a long wait until we can retain Chinook this year.
This notice is from March 23rd this year.   I'm not sure that I want to start C&R on Springs

For those not familiar with the "areas" the Lower Mainland portion of the Fraser River is covered by subareas 29-11 to 29-17

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
RECREATIONAL - Salmon
Subject:  FN0199-Salmon: Early timed Fraser Chinook - Subareas 29-6, 29-7, 29-9 to 29-17 and Region 2 - Recreational Management Actions
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spawning escapements of Early-Timed Fraser River Chinook have declined to very
low levels and the Department is continuing to implement additional measures to
reduce harvest impacts. Additional management measures are required again in
2009 for commercial, recreational and First Nation fisheries to halt the
decline of Early-Timed Fraser River Chinook.
Effective 00:01 hrs Wednesday April 1, 2009 and until 23:59 hrs Sunday May 31,
2009 additional recreational fishery restrictions on Chinook salmon will be in
effect in Subareas 29-6, 29-7, 29-9 and 29-10.  During this time period and in
this area the daily limit is zero (0) Chinook salmon.
The current regulations in Subareas 29-11 to 29-17 and the waters of the Fraser
River in Region 2 effective from January 1 to April 30, 2009 are no fishing for
salmon.
Effective 00:01 hrs Friday May 1, 2009 and until 23:59 hrs Monday June 15, 2009
additional recreational fishery restrictions on Chinook salmon will be in
effect in Subareas 29-11 to 29-17 and the waters of the Fraser River in Region
2.  During this time period and in these areas the daily limit is zero (0)
Chinook salmon
.
Variation Order No. 2009-104 and 2009-105
So far, it sounds the same as last year. Size restrictions will be to Aug 8th (approx?). The late summer Springs should be in abundance again, so it looks the pretty much the same as last year. Although....with DFO things can change for no apparant reason ???
At our FVSS annual meeting this evening it looks like the earliest we will have a chinook opening on the Fraser is indeed June 15. It also will depend on the Albion test fishery to see what the index is showing what the 2009 run size looks like. There is another meeting this Thursday that may also shed some light on when the opening could happen as well if there will be a size restriction like last year.
The good news is the forcast for a strong chinook run in August as well as for the pinks once again.
For the few that like to fish sockeye they say there will be openings in early August.
I will provide an update as I hear any new news.
It was last week. You should have received a newsletter a month ago announcing the FVSS annual meeting. If you did not please send me an e-mail with your name and address so I can look into it.
Sorry you missed the meeting.
