i read somewhere that theres good options on the stave river for some cutthroat trout in the spring time. has anyone ever fly fished there for these fish or any fish in the spring on the stave? and if so what a good fly to use?

All the standard cutty patterns as well as stone nymphs and caddis nymphs.

about 15 years ago someone caught a 26 in cutty from there

the Stave can be great to you or you might just catch whitefish LOL I think having a small boat so you can get to the islands will help out a bit also  I will be giving it a go later on with my 'toon

There seem to be some spots where I could just row over to the islands in my rubber float boat.   (I don't have a motor unfortunately).

I get the impression it could be a bit dangerous though.   I can't help thinking they could just open those floodgates making it impossible to return.

I am tempted but chicken   Any thoughts on that?

I was there one morning before the dam opened up and watched a guy wade out to an island and started fishing. I was to far away to warn him that they open up the gates without warning and sure enough the river rose and he almost did'nt make it back so be very careful about where you fish dont take chances

I agree but things like that sure are tempting sometimes.  Its just not worth taking the chance.

Too bad, there is a lot of fishable water around those islands.

what would be the easiest way to get to the islands? iv only ever been up by the dam

By canoe. That is how I do it.

small boat would work great, something you can row would get you around pretty good on the Stave. I will be taking my 'toon out there for sure

This is all good info - maybe I will give it a go after all.  I know a spot where there is a very short stretch to some islands on the other side.

put in at the launch and paddle over,drag your watercraft up the bank to avoid it being swept away.your pontoon will be fine ,do it all the time.

If you are talking about the launch on the car parking lot side I am a little surprised - the river can run pretty fast in that area.   

When I was out there November last year they opened up the Dam gates and it, frankly looked really dangerous to attempt any kind of crossing one way or the other - especially without a motor. Other times I have gone there the place was like a Mill Pond with little current. (There were even ducks waddling around in the very area where the River was a raging torrent just a few weeks before)

Maybe it just depends on how much recent rain we get - I just worry about going out there and finding I can't get back all of sudden because the Dam has opened up.  Is there much warning?

Just make sure you start your crossing on the incoming tide and it is much easier. When coming back start further up stream on the island.

always a wise idea to take a fishing buddy with you........just incase
