Stave and Vedder Canal sept. 19th
« on: September 19, 2006, 09:18:09 AM »

Arrive at the stave river by 9am, hoping to catch some early chum or spring. to my surprise, that place was quiet as hell... WATER IS WAY TOO LOW, WAY TOO EARLY!!!  couldn't see any sign of fish. Gave it a try anyways, for about half an hour, nothin' , so i left for Vedder. Got to the KWB at 10:30am, saw about 10 fishermen there. and u know what, the guy with red cap and sunglasses on who was BBing for sox last week, was doing the same there today!!  So off i drove further down the river, to the spot right under highway 1 bridge. Met a guy who works for Fred's. A nice friendly fellow he was. we both drifted roe, to no avail. saw a tyee splashing and jumping right under the bridge often, but it just won't take our offerings.  Rain started pouring around 1 and that guy left, i grabbed his spot and switched my gear to chucking spoon. On my first cast, i mean my FIRST cast, the jack took my green gibbs koho hard!  a brief fight for about 2 minutes, and it was landed. :)  i just got excited to learn it was a jack  :-*     there were also a few coho jacks holding right beside the bridge poles too, but it just won't take anything. didn't see any sign of chum yet though.
good luck fishing , guys, water is raising and the fish r really showing up now. it's time to drop the puck, and the hook~

Not to piss on any ones parade but that fish looks pretty wierd to me...not quite coho, not quite chinook...all I can tell for sure is that the tail is missing the spots characteristic of a spring?  I guess you would need to look at the gums in this case???

I'm guessing it looks wierd because that picture looks to be taken at home. Which would mean the fish probably spent some time in a cooler or a bag.

I don't think you can kill wild coho jacks... That adipose is clearly visible...

Anyone want to contradict me?

Cheers,

most definetly a jack spring. those spots are much too big to be a coho

wow that coho has HUGE spots biff, but in most chases jacks have those large spots, it looks like in the pic it also has black gums as well. that article is interesting, it says springs always have an adipose fin yet in the vedder ive caught big springs with no adipose fin and my bro got a nice red a few years ago in the fraser with no adipose fin...
