Most Memorable Coho Moments
« on: September 11, 2006, 09:47:41 PM »

Since I haven't had a chance to go out for coho yet, I can't post on the "coho porn" thread.  However, I thought I'd start a new thread and have the members post some of their most memorable coho.  Post up and explain why the fish was so special... :D.

Here's a few of mine:

Coho #1:  One of my favorite days on the Vedder fly fishing for coho in a big pool.  This was in October 2003 before the big rains washed away the pool which hasn't been there since!  The fish were stacked up in the pool and the best way to get them was on the fly!  This 8 lb. coho was typical of many of the fish that were hooked that day...

Coho #2:  Another of my favorite days on the Vedder in early October 2003.  This is a beauty 10 lb. fish that took a Mickey Finn that was cast and retrieved.  This is the largest coho I've landed to date...

Coho #3:  After five years of exclusively fly fishing for salmon, I picked up a drift rod and reel.  This is my first coho on the drift gear - October 2004.  I was fishing the Chilliwack mid river in the pocket water with wool.  I quickly realized that I loved to hook coho no matter what kind of rod was in my hand!

So - there's a few "memorable" coho moments!  Come on guys - let see what sticks in your minds!

Cheers - FFM   ;)

Well, here are a couple of mine.  This one was from 2004, I was out on an exploritory mossoin at the end of August.  Aug 29 to be exact, not expecting to much maybe a trout ot 2.  Was fishing an at that time unfamiliar piece of water, and saw so,e fish rising.  These fish were not trout, much to big for trout.  Anyhow, I threw everything I had at them until I got to the Baldes.  First cast and BAM, fish on, and it would up being a small Coho.  My earliest Coho ever and a real nice unexpected treat. ;)

There are other stories about the 12 Coho in a short period of time in Dropping water conditions on the Vedder, and the Big Hatchery Coho on the Chehalis when I lost my expensive Sunglasses!! But well, I don't feel like typing those ones out again!! ;D ::) ;D

My most memorable wasn't the biggest or the most that i had caught in one day ,the most memorable coho was my first ever vedder coho back in October 1982 ,i was fishing around the south side of peach rd using roe and up till that point i was very frustrated ,i hadn't caught anything in 6 trips while everyone around me was just hammering them left and right ,then bam fish on and man what an attitude adjustment 1 4lb fish can make ,i was all smiles all the way back to coquitlam.

One of my most memorable was a large wild buck.  I posted this report last year...but I'll give ya a quick recap.

I was fishing the seymour, I had a float on and had been drifting blades in a pool that was maybe 15+ feet...I could hardly cast I had so much line out!  Anyhow after not having any bites I decided to shorten up and fish a closer/shallower trough.  I decide this as I was reeling in so when my float got to my hands I stopped reeling and started to adjust my float.  I guess because I had been reeling, the blade was up near th esurface and as I adjusted the float the blade swung down thru the water and thats when it happen! WHAM WHAM WHAM...the float was in my hand still, infact my finger was stuck under the line!!!  I could feel and see the huge fish head shaking right at my feet.  It made a run and I opened my hand and the line slipped off and then all I could see is the bobber floating on its side in the middle of the pool.  I grabbed my reel and reeled as I lifted the rod tip and it was fish on still.  After about 10  minutes I brought in this big males, I would put it around 14lbs...just a hog!  That is probably the most memorable take I have ever experienced!

A few weeks ago up the sunshine coast, wading in on a pebble beach up to my waist with panicking baitfish erupting all around me, and coho exploding on the surface after them.  Sight fishing at its best!

I have alot of memorable stories, it would keep my busy writing for hours :)

Here is my biggest coho to date, my best guess it that it was between 18 and 20 lbs... The fish was so heavy I could not pick it up off the ground!

When this fish hit, the initial surge had us all believing it was hooked in the my friend... It tore up the water like I've never seen a coho do outside of Saltwater... Slashing around on the surface, tearing up the pool... It was unreal, and I could not believe it when I saw it did eat the fly...

I've had prettier fish, but this one by far gave the most hard core of a battle... And it was a hatchery fish too, but I threw it back.

Cheers,
Nicole

Nice strory nicole,  must have been fun!   Don't blame you for tossing it back, that's one ugly looking beak on that thing!

But hey, I'd be proud of a coho that big myself!
