sins of Sockeye fishery
« on: September 04, 2006, 08:38:59 PM »

It's was a great season for Sockeye fishing and I'm glad it will be over in a couple of days in the upper Fraser!!! I was disappointed with the lack of enforcement at some bars.
Witnessed all the sins of this meat fishery: :(  :(
-Double dippers...try 4 to 5x per day outing.
-Bagging 3x over their limits in one outing.
-Fishing with barbed hooks.
-Keeping body hooked fish.
-Fishing after dark.
-killing and throwing away a small fish for a larger one.
-Not recording Spring catches.
-Garbage all over the bars.
Overall most fishers were following the rules, however it takes a few to screw things up.  We've told many about rules but got a finger instead!!  Wish I had not witness this kind of behaviour out there.

Kind of makes you wonder where was the enforcement that was promised earlier this year. :o

That's kinda what I was thinking.  I didn't see an officer once this season.  :-\

DFO always seem to make a big show every year about bringing in resources from other provinces to help enforce the regulations during the sockeye season. Yadda, yadda yadda. They'll make a few appearances during the chinook bar fishery but mysteriously disappear during the sockeye fishery.

Remember, if you see violations - call the DFO and report them.  I know it may be a small consolation prize - but at least it's something we all can do.  I've got the number programed into my cell phone.  Hey scales - I hope you reported them.

...at least report the more "serious" violations such as the double dippers and limit violators... :-\

DFO were checking everyone coming outta peg today and inspecting their catches and licenses.

Report to DFO?  Hate to say but it's a waste of cell phone time, done this before with no response!!!  I'll told many about the REGS.  It's time the COs do their jobs!!! and not me.

I think DFO put more efforts towards larger scale poaching this year.

Why the surprise? It's just like other things in life. Why go for the petty little fisherman who takes home an extra fish(or 5) when there are poachers out there with nets? The single fisherman at least contributes to the economy with line, hooks and maybe a license. You can compare it to the average marijuana user. Should he/she be punished or the person that is cultivating multiple pounds a month? Why waste the resources on the small offender?

THIS IN NO WAY MEANS I CONDONE DOUBLE AND TRIPLE DIPING!! OR THE USE OF MARIJUANA.

Sorry had to shout it out. I thought someone might read that and think I condone the illegal activities.

Its amazing how fast that type of activity stops when you pull out your cellphone as soon as you see it....however its a bit dangerous too...  If you feel strongly about it, the best thing you can do is take a picture, discreetly, of what you see happening.  Have DFO's number in your cellphone so you can quickly report it, and if possible, get the liscence plates of the "accused" persons vehicle.  I think the key word is discreet, the guys doing this have a disregard for authority and consequence in the first place or they wouldnt be doing it, so you need to be careful.

Its not enough these days to just "go to a different bar".  We owe it to each other to report this stuff.
