Sockeye Flossing....should it be shut down?
« on: August 18, 2006, 07:46:18 AM »

So many people have different opinions when it comes to sockeye fishing on the fraser.  I've noticed there are many die hard fishermen that hate the fraser floss, but with the popularity soaring, there are record number of people on the fraser.

What's your take?  Should it be kept open or shut down?

PLEASE STICK TO THE POLL.  I don't want to start a war with various responses,  We already know there are lot's of opinions and heated debates to be had.  If you want a debate about it, please start a debate thread.  This is meant to be a poll only.

Keep it open but use a take your limit and stop bbing rule.

2 per fisherman  then  stop or alter the way your fishing.

Oh ya and you know this will start an arguement right?

I'd vote but I've never heard of a fish called a "Sockey"? What is that? Perhaps you should take more care when starting a poll with a fish that does not exist - that is bound to cause debate.

Recognize it as a meat fishery, get your two sockeye and go bar fishing or some other activity.

I say keep it open aslong as any other fishery is getting openings , last week i saw maybe 40 sox taken home max! im sure a nice big net gets around that number in 1 drift.

i think as long as the resource can handle the abuse that it takes from this kind of fishing leave it open,if you are concerned about the pounding these fish take from the methods used then we should also be very concerned about the   amount of damage the fn and commercial netting does to these fish,i would guess that more fish get harmed in these fisheries than they do in the recreational opening, think about what happens to all the fish that get stressed out by the nets that don't manage to get caught, also what happens to all the commercial and first nations chinook that are caught in their nets when there is no opening for them,do these fish survive when they are thrown back?Don't know the answers but i do feel that if the stocks are in danger in our systems then it should be shut down for all user groups but if the stocks are healthy everyone should get a piece of the pie,the bottom line is the well being of the resource not one group or another's personal agenda. :) ???

Ban flossing/bottom bouncing and force anglers to use other methods. More and more people are catching them on the bar rods so they obviously do bite. Personally I hate this time of the year. Myself being a barfisherman dont want to fight the crowds just to get a spot to relax and enjoy the day barfishing. Snagging is not fishing. I dont understand how some of you are proud of snagging fish and posting pictures of snagged fish. I wait untill the snagging is done and I will be back out there. Thats my opinion and like everyone I am entitled to it.

good points Eddie99 I think changes in the regulations for this fishery as long it is to be open should be something that are considered.

For the people who dont bottom bounce, what method do you use for sockeye on the Fraser? Also the Fraser is huge, how can you not find a spot to barfish? Still I find that getting out and bottom bouncing for my sockeye is alot better then going to the local safeway and supporting the commerical fishers that will net them anyways, in the hundreds of thousands. As long as the sockeye harvest is being looked after I see no reseason to put a stop to bottom boucing, as it is a fun and social event, meeting lots of new people, and usually everyone goes home happy with something to show for, thats the best part. The downside of every sockeye opening is the garbage that seems to follow it, but people are doing a very good job of cleaning it up at the popular bars, yesterday peg leg looked spotless. ;) I wish they would close off 4x4 onto the fraser river bars, as this is the most populted river right now.

I have no problem supporting the commercial fishermen. Its their "JOB" thats how they pay their mortgage, put food on the table for their families etc.. Do you work? Does someone pay you for it? If so how is that any different? What if where you worked started losing money and shutdown? People that complain about the commercial fishermen are very inconsiderate and greedy. They did not even get an opening last year yet the natives did. I feel for them.

I dont have a boat ( Untill September 22nd that is  ;D ) so I am stuck barfishing from somewhere with vehicle access only. Its not easy finding a spot by foot at this time thats not covered in people.

Bigfisher you are right garbage is a down side to this opening but i think there are bigger issues that most people are not getting at all, such as since bottom bouncing with 12 ft leaders is not only part of the sockey routine but it is also becoming a regular occurrence on our other systems as well ,IE the vedder, this hasn't always been this way its only recently,is this a good thing ,i think not,is this how we want new fisherman to be introduced to the sport of fishing,i hope not, because if this trend continues i should sell all my gear now because the damage to the smaller rivers isn't going to leave much in the way of fish to catch. On our local Rivers i see the catch and kill at all cost mentality growing year after year,in the 25 plus years i have fished locally this trend has never been so obvious as it has been since the sockeye fishery began on the Fraser.tight lines. :) :)
