Fishing Story Writing Contest

Ian Yeung

I was quite young when I first fell in love with fishing. Every Sunday morning, I would squirm myself into my parents’ bed and watch fishing shows on television. At about the age of seven, I bought my first fishing rod combo using the money saved. Since my parents did not find fishing too enjoyable, I had little fishing experience. However, my lucky day came when I was ten, all thanks to my dad. My father worked in a bank, and he would tell his clients all about me. One day, one of his customers invited us to his boat for a day long fishing trip.

I was pretty excited. I could not sleep for days and I would often daydream at school about the fish I was going to catch. Finally, the big day came. As you know, the more you think about something, the results are usually the opposite. So I first started off with an extremely upset stomach. I had to go to the washroom at the dock three times in fifteen minutes. Just when we were about to fish, I was feeling a bit light headed and wanted to barf. And once I tried to join in the action I snagged bottom twice. I was extremely sad. I continued my unlucky day until lunch.

We were getting a bit hungry, so we decided to dock the boat at a nearby pier on a small island. The adults were eating, but I was determined to catch a fish. So without eating much, I ran back to the pier to attempt to catch fish. Again, I screwed it up. I was using a baitcaster reel and did not exactly know how to operate it. As a result, the lines were all tangled. I spent at least half an hour fixing it. But the unexpected thing happened; my first fish hooked itself while I was fixing the reel. I was so happy; I screamed the crap out of me. From that point on, my luck seemed to change. Back on the boat I was catching different species of fish every few minutes, such as flounders, rockfish and dogfish. And the coolest thing happened. A huge dogfish I caught was for some reason giving birth to these little dogfish we kept in a container. Up till now, I still do not know how’s that possible but it was just amazing.

After the trip, we filleted all the flounder and put them into congee. It was purely delicious. From that point on, I was always hoping for another trip similar to that, since it was the first and the best fishing trip I’ve ever had.

A FISHING TRIP TO REMEMBER

By The Roe Kid

Well every year our family and all my aunts and uncles and grandparents
take a week off in the beginning of August to go fishing up at Sooke.  My
grandpa hand crafted a trophy which has a salmon on top and the past  4
winners of the derby. Lucky for me my name is on there with a 32lb spring in
2003.

Every year we book around 4-5 fishing charters with only 3-4 people going
on each charter. Last year one of those charters was out of port Renfrew
which is like heaven for all fishermen. The only thing is that I have 3
brothers and 3 cousins all older than me. Not to mention that 3 of them are
well over 6'2 and weigh well over 215lbs.  So we end up getting in a big
argument and sometimes fists are thrown to see who gets to go on which
charter. Well last year I was blessed and got to go on the big charter to
Renfrew. Because I went on this charter I only got to go on one other
charter but that did not bother me because I knew fishing in Renfrew would
be the best by far.

Well 2 charters have past and I have not been on one of them. But they did
not do very well both times out. So far the biggest spring is only about 19
lbs. They hooked many pinks and the odd Coho also. But this did not matter
for me because tomorrow is the big day.

It was now reaching 8 o-clock at night and almost time to hit the sack
because I have an early wake up at 4am. That night I had a dream about
"Perfect Storm", the movie. I dreamed this because from reading past fishing
reports out of Renfrew the waves can reach 25ft and is often stormy. I
dreamed that we all catch many fish but in the end our boat capsizes and we
all die. What a good dream to have just before I go fishing.

I woke up in great joy all pumped to go fishing and catch multiple fish.
Renfrew is about an hour away from where we were staying so in order to be
there around 5:30 we would have to leave around 4:30. When we arrived at the
dock our captain was awaiting us in his 29ft  boat. We started our journey
heading 20 miles off shore. HOLY MOLY were the waves ever big, reaching well
over 15ft and crashing ferociously against our boat. I began to think twice
about my dream. Anyway after about an hour and a half boat ride we reach our
fishing destination. SWIFTSHURE BANK (kind of like the Flemish cap off of
perfect storm) . We drop our halibut gear down nearly 300ft and within 25
minutes we are into 2 very nice ling cod. 19lbs and 26 lbs. Bonk Bonk. After
that it was halibut after halibut. As the day went on the weather got worse.
Making it extremely hard to stay on your feet when fighting a fish. My dad
took a countless number of spills injuring his arm and leg. After about 1.5
hours at that spot we had our limit in halibut. I asked our captain why we
are the only boat out here and his reply was because I am the only one
stupid enough to be out in this weather. What inspiring words.

We then moved on to salmon fishing , trolling spoons and plugs. On the way
over to salmon fishing we saw 3 dolphins jump simultaneously and saw one
vast killer whale splashing around. Wow I said to myself what a marvelous
sight. On arrival I saw many coho swimming near the surface.   This was the
most thrilling fishing by far because you could admire all the salmon
swimming up to your spoon 2 feet away from the boat and striking. We must
of hooked over 50 coho and kept our limit. But if you wanted to get spring
after spring you had to put the rod on the downrigger and fish deep. We did
that and shortly after got our limit in springs. The springs were not the
biggest but man did they ever put up a great fight.

On the boat ride back I could not believe what I just went through. It was
like a dream come true for me. I hooked well over 50 beautiful salmon and
got to experience nature at its finest. This was truly a gift from God.
