Rieber - go out to a park or something and try tossing it further, distance is where the problems lie  when you get that spool spinning and a good rate of speed is when things can go wrong in a hurry. This is what i would practice first, at least a little. Or if you have a local lake/pond or what have you close use that instead as to not damage the mono 

I go to Green Timbers to practice my spey casting sometimes, especially right before steely season if i havent used it in awhile
