Camp style trout
« on: June 16, 2005, 01:06:11 PM »

Going camping with a buddy in a couple of weeks, hoping to prove to her that I can actually catch fish, and that I can actually cook.  ::)

Any ideas for a recipe ? Beer batter ?  8)

Weave the fish between some green boughs, and cook over open fire! Yummy!

heat up an old skillet (camp style) and slap a couple of pieces of bacon in it..and cook it down so there is lots of drippings...then open your trout up, and place it meat side down...or, thread it onto a stick with a slice of bacon inside. Rolled in corn flour is good too

Try just cutting off the head and tail and gutting it,then fill the inside with salt, pepper and lemon juice.Wrap it in tin foil and put it on a grill over the fire, or if you want you can put it in the hot coals just like your doing baked potatos. When its in the foil all the juices and flavour gets locked inside and makes it nice, tasty and moist.

We would just rap them in tinfoil add a little butter may be some onions or garlic if we had some, then lay them along the edge of the fire until done.

If youre really roughing it, just put some rocks really close to the fire, let them heat up for a good half hour.  Gut your fish and place it on the rocks....you'll feel like a caveman and of course, being trout, it usually tastes great without any help (unless its muddy!)
We used to do this up at Idabel lake in the okanagan with brookies (i know, not trout), and craw-daddies!

slice a couple line on both side of the fish, put on butter, then 'stick' the fish. let it bake beside the fire, close to cooked sprinkle salt and pepper and bake for a minute or two. and it's done.
