Chilliwack River, March 26th 2013
« on: March 26, 2013, 02:26:47 PM »

later start to the day today. started below cement and worked my way down to borden. water was favourable top to bottom.no action wad had until I hit the top run at borden, had a quick chat one with fellow and two casts later it was floater down!! it was a short lived battle as the hook surfaced and the andrenaline was still pumping. a couple casts to the same seam and nothing. drove to the mid to get some lunch and gas up. hit the lower on the way down and saw two metal chuckers and a spey guy. not to my surprise no hits. all in all a fun day! will be heading out tomorrow for an early trip and what might be my last as the cv boot covers in my car not really there. a quick question to anyone reading this: my rod is rated as a slow action rod, will this cause my hook sets to be too light?

I've never found a need for those huge hook sets. I think a sticky sharp hook is more important. You could always just pull hard on the hook sets like the bass anglers do on tv lol.

not looking for those kind of hook sets, that would cut my trips to 2-3 hours putting strain on my back!   :o

The power of the rod plays a larger role in hookset ability. A soft, noodly rod will not achieve the same hook.
What I have seen is that short, slow action rods don't keep enough bend while fighting a fish to be able to absorb the shock when the fish runs, head shakes, or rolls. This results in more lost fish.

It doesn't take much force to burry a sharp hook.

What rod do you have mvelasco?

What kind of rods were you using ? I have no problem using slow action rods at all. Like Johnny Canuck mention, you need to have a sticky sharp hook is more important.

What he meant was the shimano is a good rod at a great price versus dropping $500+ on a pin rod... Unless of course you have cash to burn and buy top of the line everything even if you're unsure that you will like the technique.

You fished the upper part of Chilliwack river where the steelies are (probalay) being hooked numerous time and I believed they tend to bite little lighter. I too loose quite bit more steelies on upper part and my Owner hooks are super sharp, just my 2 cent worth.
