Tidal Fraser River, October 30th, 2011
« on: October 30, 2011, 04:22:07 PM »

Caught the high tide this morning - rough weather for the first hour or two.  Once the rain and wind died down, and high tide had peaked, I managed to get the biggest chum of the year so far (and he fought good and hard).  Got him on a home made spinner (copper blade), and he was released shortly after the photo.  He had sea lice all over the place.

Exactly 2 casts later, with the same spinner I got the biggest, most chrome bull trout I've ever caught:

I thought it was a nice coho at first because the way it fought, how chrome it was, and its size.  I did't even think of trying to pick it up by the belly because it wouldn't have been possible.  The fish had to be 5 or 6lbs.  I had to look closely to just barely see the peach coloured spots all over her.  Shortly after the photo, she popped the hook out by herself.

Then about another 45 minutes went by before I managed to get the best fish of the day:

A wild coho hen, probably the same size of the bull trout I caught.  I'm constantly amazed at how incredible fighters coho can be.  The acrobatics are just sick.

What a great day!  Hope to try again tomorrow, but probably not until Tuesday.

Nice fish and great report! I also hit the high water on the lower Fraser and had a good coho hit on roe (line went slack after bite). Landed a nice chrome chum. Probably the most chrome I have ever seen this late in the year. I have also noticed the chum are a lot smaller than usual.

An excellent fall outing in the Tidal Fraser River is when you get into a variety of good fish.

Did you measure how long the bull trout was? I was out for a couple of hours this afternoon searching for bull trout, but could not find any fish. The same waters two or three years ago would guarantee a few fish per outing, so it's pretty strange that the catch results have gone down in the last couple of years.

Didn't get a measurement on the bull trout, as I was by myself and just wanted to keep it in the water - but it was breathtaking!  I've seen how big they can get on Fishing TV shows, but this one was huge in my books!  I'd say it was about the same size as the coho i caught length wise, but maybe a bit skinnier.  As for the spoon, it was the old trusty Pink Croc spoon - I've caught a lot of fish this fall with that spoon (hopefully I don't lose it).  I changed the hook to a Gamakatsu and I haven't had the hook pop out since I made the switch.  Going to try again tomorrow, can't go today as I've gotten way behind with work over the last 2 months.
