What is the right set up?? what rod wt? I am guessing maybe 8 wt rod because incase you hook a salmon?
How about the line? full sinking or sink tip?  How long should the leader be? tippet??

Fish minnow patterns for them in late winter and spring (sink line). 5 or 6 weight is ideal.

Cutthroat trout are agressive fish and will take most flies you throw at them.

Piranha, I usually fish a 6 wt. rod, sinktip, 8 ft. tapered leader with a 4-6 lb. tippet (3 ft).   In rivers, egg patterns (Glo Bugs) work well during & after salmon spawning.   Fry patterns work well in the spring.   Searun cutthroat fishing off saltwater beaches can be hit & miss, however, you will often see them if they are around.   Rolled Muddlers are a good all round pattern for rivers & saltwater.

In the summer I chuck dry's for them in the local flow. 6wt is perfect and my fav. dry fly pattern is the tom thumb. They are very aggressive but you have to be willing to put time in and look for them. Most of the time they give themselves away so look for moving fish and jumpers. Good luck!

6wt on a fish that averages 15 inches?  Try 3 or 4 wt.  I use a floating line for them with about 8 ft. of 4x tapered leader, usually around 4lb test.  That or just 6 or 8 lb mono.  Ideally a multitip setup would be the way to go.  Some days they just don't seem to want a fly just under the surface yet will be hammering flies presented lower.

If you're going to target other fish as well, 6 is a great all round rod....just too heavy if getting it specifically for searun cutts.
