Fishing Lingo
« on: February 25, 2007, 10:03:47 AM »

So after listening to thousands of people tell me their fishing stories I am always left with a wondering of what actually happend. When words like "got" and "caught" get used rather than "hooked" and "landed" it leaves much to interpretation. So I ask, what lingo do you use when telling stories?

I consider got and caught to both mean landed, but many do not, and that leaves for discrepencies. I've heard people say "I got 3 today." If I respond "Any pictures?" I'll often hear back "No I didn't land them." It can lead to very inacurate stories, and further increases the Fisherman's reputation of being a bullsh!ter and exagerator. I also here the phrase "got action" which is a really open comment. What happened? Did you have a take down, hook a fish, land one, land lots, or did you just get a different type of head? ::)

Its the same with anything, not just with fishing. Lots of phrases are open to interpretation. Their is never going to be one way to say what you mean. If you respond to someone's post and are unsure of what is meant just ask. Just don't ask in a rude way.

My interpretations have obviously been way off...so I'm changing mine to reflect my fishing expertice so I can be like the big shots....From now on!!

Rolled one today..busted him off......(means)......Hit a snag and lost my gear!

Got some action, was into a couple........Wife gave me a kiss on the way out the door, drank a double double..

Fished for awhile with nothing...then couldn't keep them off the hook.........got skunked!!!

Caught some but forgot my camera.......got skunked!!!

Yeah, I was into fish today..but they were colored..........got skunked and hit some snags!!!

Landed a big one, but he was wild so let him go.............Hooked a stick!!!

Add any others you may like...... ;D

Well...LoL...the lingo seems to vary quite a bit... ::)  I think when it comes down to it if an angler is going to report on their day, they will say whatever they want, truth or fiction, sad but true. Myself, if I post a report, which is rare, I will make it completely accurate. I cannot compromise my integrity by lying or fabricating stories. I wouldn't feel good about myself. I would feel no satisfaction fabricating a story just to sound like I know what I'm doing, in the end the poster knows the truth of their account, and they have to live with that. I wouldn't be able to feel good at all juicing up stories just to gratify some percieved sense of skill or what not if I didn't get into or beach any fish that day.

Having said that, if you ever do see a report from me I would use these terms to describe a day:

Got into one = Had a fish on for a decent fight
Beached it = bonked a hatchery
Tailed it = Brought one to hand and released it
Lost it = the fish won the fight
Touched a fish = Had a definite take, with headshakes, but failed on the hookset or it spat the hook within a few secs
Didn't touch a fish all day = skunked
Sorry, no pics = Released the fish quickly, rather than handling it for the extra time it takes to get a picture

These terms would be used interchangeably with their definitions, and often I will elaborate on conditions, ie visibility, water height, what was used and anything else interesting about the day...

For those anglers who like to juice things up in their reports, feel free to gratify your fragile ego's by making yourself out to be more successful than you are, I could care less, this isn't a place to brag, it's a venue to share, learn and grow with regards to the sport.
If you feel you have to brag or lie when you can't brag, you're in this for the wrong reasons...you know who you are  ;) .

For those of you who tell it like it is, well, good on ya...integrity is everything.

ya i totally agree with what you are saying Ribwart,i don't know who some guys  think they are kidding , it all comes down to knowing who you are and being confident and happy with your own ability, for me I'm comfortable enough with myself that i don't feel the need to BS people just to make my self look good in their eyes, for me i am who i am and if that isn't enough to make people look at me in a positive way ,to bad because in the grand scheme of things i couldn't care less and thats  their problem, not mine. :) :)
Oh and my favorite lingo has got to be,today I'm 2-4 and 6-9 on the season ,stats stats stats, who really cares except for each individually keeping tabs on their own personall success.

One of the terms my dad passed onto me ages ago for a beak or a newbie was a....scissorbill.  Don't know how it originated (England....back in the 30's 0r 40's ??)but was the go to word for a greenhorn or something that you'd expect from..I used to hear it all the time as a kid growing up fishing.  It's still the word I use on buddies who screw up.  Anybody else ever hear this term?

And then there's ...""coffee grinder" for a spinning reel, "gilly" is a guide, and "corking" means someone who jumps in to start fishing down river from you, "guts" is roe.  I'm sure there are others that you guys can come up with.

And last but not least "bonehead"  as in when Jan Bullis take a penalty in the last 2 min. of the game to cost the Canucks their 7th win in a row.

I agree with Ribwart too. Like most thing in life I find there are two kinds of people those who do the task and those who talk about doing the task. When you have been around this game long enough you will find that a few key questions will cut the bull fast. As for pictures, they are nice if you have them; but for many anglers (I am one) taking a picture is a nuisance.
