Tidal Fraser River September 4th
« on: September 04, 2006, 04:47:14 PM »

Our youth fishing camp is winding down again for another year. Today I took out five more kids who are now begging their parents to purchase fishing gear. ;D That's what shiner perch does to you. ;)

The top rod today was surprisingly a 6 year old, who outfished his 9 and 11 year old friends. ;D The quiet ones are always the ones to watch out for, they pay attention and end up becoming fishing machines. ;D

Water clarity continues to be excellent. It was so clear today that the fish could be seen pecking on the bait under the float. The only problem is that the kids started looking at the fish instead of the float. ::) As I brought up earlier, if this clarity continues for the next several weeks, October is going to be incredible in the Tidal Fraser River. :)

Shiner perch fishing was spectacular. As we approached incoming tide at 1:00pm, the fish were being hauled up once every couple of minutes. My job at the end was simply threading worm on the hooks and unhooking fish. ;D

Here is a photo of the shiner perch, prior to being released. Notice the vertical display, every fish was seeking for shades. ;D

The other highlight of today's outing was the visit by these swans. ;)

One more day, then I am done with touching worms and shrimps. Bring on the roe. ;D

Very nice report Rodney!!  I should have been over there catching Shiner Perch with you guys!!  I was also fishing the lower Faser today, I got skunked and was so bored at times that I wound up counting sockeye that I saw jumping.  This was all low tide as well.  I did see 3 Jack Springs caught, biggest was about 5 lbs.  Another person lost something a bit bigger, it broke his line.   :o
Was a real nice day to be out anyways.  BTW, Rodney, how do those Shiner perch thingys taste?  They are a neat looking fish!!

Oh yeah, and for a 5 hr period on low tide, I saw 63 sockeye jump!! But I am, sure there was a lot more than that around!! ;D ;D

Shiner is also a good introductory fish to young kids.  In summer it's almost a guaranteed catch.  So kids won't get bored.
