Really can't understand why he had to handle a steelhead he was going to release in that manner.
Besides sticking his fingers under the gill plate, holding up a sizable fish like that could put undue pressure on the spinal cord possibly damaging it.
Likewise, hoisting up a steelhead or salmon by the tail without supporting the body puts unnecessary pressure on the spinal cord, sometimes even severing it.
I don't think the poor guy know it.

Still, you did the right thing by letting him know.
Sometimes it is frustrationg when well intentioned advice is ignored like that.
But there are also others who accept advice. Until we try, I guess we never know.

totally different fishery guys, you should see some of the pics that these guys post up on the Great Lakes forums, -20 out and the've got the fish literally freezing to death on the ice while taking pics only to be released a few minutes later.
