chilliwack report feb 05
« on: February 05, 2006, 07:35:48 PM »

well, took my buddy hawk out for his first steelhead trip of the year. We hit the mid river, a favorite slot when the water is up a touch. Vis was good but flow a lil fast..... perfect. It proved to be a good bet after hitting a run on the lower and getting nothin. the action started on the 3rd cast with  Hawk getting a snag that turned out to be a beauty 13/14 lbs wild doe :D . I countered not 10 mins later with a wild buck of about 10lbs. We had pulled 2 fish from the same little slip in 1/2 an hour. We sat back and had a "smoke" and then back to it. Hawk was above me a few yards when I heard a woop, fish on!!! the ensuing battle through the froth of tamahi, yielded a nice 6/7 lbs wild doe. After landing this fish I rigged up the ol killer tiger prawn and on the 4th cast... wham down goes the float and it's on. A brief fight and another smallish chrome bright doe is released back to the flow.

We later bumped into Big Steel and GT (?) who had some action of thier own.

The only downside today was a couple clowns this morning fishing the south side just above peach road around 10:30/11:00 a.m. . Buddy with a black vest and white ball hat hooks a nice big wild steelhead and proceeds to drag it up the beach a good 40 feet throught the sand and gravel. his buddy, a tubby guy wearing blackwater waders picks up the fish and walks all the way back to the river and "drops" the fish from chest high back into the water, basically throwing it. They were accompanied by another guy wering green vest and blue jacket. I was appalled at this display of idiocy. If you two (3) are from this site.... which i pray you are not.... you have no business fishing for steelhead.... CLOWNS.... stick to flossing sockeye like the freakin beaks that you are. ( not meaning all sockeye fishers are beaks, i do it too)

As Tom stated, Gt and I made it out today as well, we were into 5, Biggest was a wild Buck about 16lbs :D ;D , that my GT was able to get, then he lost a hatch at the shore about 10-11 lbs. I didn't get anything in the morning, but had a good afternoon, with losing a monster when he took off down a run, after a few arial displays and wound up spitting the hook after a 10 or so min battle!! Don't even want to guess how big that one was!!!  :o But 10 min later, hooked and tailed a nice chrome 12-13lb wild doe, and a few casts after that got into another one!! So a real good day!!  Here are a couple of pics!!

The Doe hit harder then any fish I have ever caught, she almost pulled the pole out of my hands!! ;D  I had to grab the rod with my other hand to stop from losing the whole outfit!! :o
I had just finished telling GT about 20 seconds before hand that I was sure that there was one there!!  He said soon after, "you were right you....." ;D ;D

Well done it sounds like you boys had agreat day,Usually i fish with bs and gt but today i got a late start arriving around 11am and decided to check out the upper river with guppy and meet up with the boys a Little later down river, well i never made it down river due to the fact the upper was in great shape and i was able to find a couple of fish of my own as well as seeing several other fish caught by other anglers , all in all it was another great day to be out i just wish guppy could get his first steely and feel the sensation of the battle, sorry no pics today i don't have enough hands for the task.

Nice going guys. Sounds like you had a enjoyable day except for the so called anglers that mistreated that wild steelhead.

It is unbelievable that with all the advice on fishing forums, as well written articles and other educational means on how important it is to release fish properly that things like this still go on.

Also unbelievable is how quickly the river came around today. I made a trip out this morning to explore some new territory but left the pole at home. It was partly that I thought the river would be out and the other reason was not to be tempted to fish. Found a few floats and cleaned up some garbage.

On the drive back saw 2 steelhead on, inside of 3 minutes.

I was able to get out for an hour tonight but saw nothing.

Tomorrow is the start of another week of fishing and brood capture. Sounds like the weather forcast is favorable and hopefully we will have some good fishing as well. Will see some of you on the flow I am sure. Catch me a wild or two for the tube.

I may even have a journal or two to write.

Chris, we were wondering where you were, as the 2 in the pics would have been an exellent Brood Stock pair!!!  Oh well, would have been difficult to get them out of there unharmed anyways!! ;) :)

At this time we do not do brood capture on the weekends. Things are going well so far, as of Friday we are over half way there. (Total is around 70 total for the season) Will get a count and breakdown of sexes tomorrow.

Flyrod and I were out today, he released about a 12 lb hatchery fish taken on his second cast. A couple hours later, I got about an 8 lb hatchery that was laid to rest on my BBQ grill at half time. Both fish were caught in the lower river on pro cured coho roe.

That pic makes me sad... a dead bloody Steelhead in a greasy pickup bed.  :(
