As Promised ... Duke's First Post
« on: February 03, 2006, 07:03:23 PM »

It was a pleasure meeting Chris Gadsen for the first time while on the lower Vedder yesterday.  As his post mentions we spent some time fishing together.  While doing so, I mentioned that I have been lurking on this site for a couple of years now and was goaded into making my first posting.  Having arrived home in Steveston I found myself too tired to post last night but not too tired to be talked into hitting the flow again today by Calvin from Nikka.

So once again I found myself crawling out of bed at o' dark thirty to be on the river by first light.  Why so early...I dunno know.  Started fishing the same slot Chris and I met on yesterday.  First part of the morning was fairly slow until Steelieman was into a fish just upstream.  He was fishing a tailout along a treed bank.  Chris, with a brood tube, ran towards Steelieman with streamstones clattering beneath his wading boots but alas before Chris got up to him the fish was off.  A short time later Steelieman was into another, a hatchery which he carried away from the river... leaving his spot open.

I was into that vacated spot like a fat kid on a Smartie and began fishing the tailout.  After 15 minutes or so I look downstream and see that Chris has a fish on.  I look back to my drift and notice my float is going under, so I lift the rod and am happy to see I have a fish on.  A few headshakes and I glance down towards Chris and see his rod straighten as his fish comes off.  My fish starts to run slowly and moments later it too comes off.  I look up at the sky and consider taking up golf again.

Five minutes later I hook another and set the hook a little more firmly.  Headshakes and a few runs followed by a leap into the air and the fish begins to swim upstream towards me but I need to land the fish downstream since the shoreline is a tangle of rocks and trees where I am.  I reel line in quickly and stamp my feet in an attempt to scare the fish further out and downstream.  The fish cooperates and moves down where she was identified as a hatchery by Chris who helps me beach my first hatchery of the season.

Spent the next hour and a half talking with Calvin, Gordie, Kenny and my friend Bainer before heading home.  On the way to the truck I ran into Peter who had a tripod with a fancy camera on it so I got in front of it and posed.  All in all a very enjoyable day for me.  When I started steelheading a few years ago Bainer and I tended to fish more upstream in an effort to get away from the crowds.  I must say that the last couple of days meeting several fishermen and running into friends has been quite nice.  The cameraderie of good people with a shared passion is sometimes just as good as having a great piece of water all to yourself.  Cheers!

Excellent post for your first entry, as well as a very nice steelhead for your first steelie of the season. The "steelieman run" was good to you. ;D I am sure there will be more to come. See my post for the picture of one happy fisher. ;D

Well done all around and thanks for your help tubing the last two days.

Hi Duke

Great 1st report and that was a very nice fish you bagged
I met you, Bainer and Hershey ( the dog ) the other day and it was nice to meet you guy's.
Bainer picked up a nice wild fish just after you left.
I believe it was the same spot !!............. and that Chris tubed it as well
As for me, I had a fish smash my roe bag and swim away ???? around Peach rd, but later connected with a nice 10-12 lb wild down from the train bridge. Just as I was bending down to pick her up for a quick photo opportunity, she kicked and flipped in the shallow water, spit the hook and said ,see ya later, no pic for you.
Oh well , there's always tomorrow
We'll see you out on the flow

I am starting to worry that there will be no fish left in the river by the time I get my butt up there!!! :o :o
please be kind to those of us who are confined to our jobs and leave some steel in the river  :)
